MEX., SEPT.14 Texans Steve Stackable and Steve Wise went south of the border to dominate the "III Premio Internacional de la Amistad" International Motocross. Stackable (Mai ) took both Open Expert motos, while Gary Jones (lsi) and Mexican rider Jorge Fernandez (Car ) battled for second, with Jones coming out ahead. Stackable and Wise (BuI ) swapped 250 Expert moto wins. with Wise getting the overall win by nabbing the second moto. Fernandez . too k top honors in the 125 Expert Division. The first National Amateur Motocross Championships in AMA history concluded under bright sunny skies on the rolling Kansas terrain. Three riders worked their way through the qualifying series to totally dominate the first Can-Am Amateur National Motocross Championships. Mark Barnett of Bridgeview. Illinois took his B&E Honda to an uncontested sweep of all three motos of the 125 championship. The West Coast region's top qualifier Mike McGowen of Spring Valley, California motored his RM250 Suzuki to a one-one-three score and the 250 Amateur National Ch ampionship. The expected struggle of the Open class titans ended early in the day when Central Region champion Do n Van Hoosier cartwhecled over the big jump to end his challenge and allow Pennsylvania's Kenny Adams to score a perfect one-one-one victory on his Ritchies Cycle CZ . OCTOBER 13 Bren Moran, a New York State resident riding for the Canadian team aboard a Jawa, .was fatally injured on the opening day of the International Six Days Trial on the Isle of Man. Mo ran died from injuries incurred when he crashed on a trail which was described as "not too difficult" by other competitors. T;' further darken the day for the man y Americans attending the Six Days was the retirement of Trophy Team member Tom Penton. Tom's Pen ton caught fire before the first check and was damaged to the point that the pop u lar rider was forced to drop out of competition. Also affected by the retirement was the Penton-A Team of which Tom was a member. Vase Team rider Max Markowitz was bruised and shaken up when his Ossa was clipped b y a ca r.
