Norton aft er three laps, an d the finishin g order was set for the rest of the rac e in spite of heavy pursuit. Don Sandretto (Bul) took first in both 250 Exp ert motos, but at the st art of t he first, Pat Ric h ter (CZ) got t he holeshot and pulled way out in front, stretching his lead for four laps . Richter was stopped by mechanical failure and Sandretto took over the lead after swapping places with Bill Swartz (Yam) several times. Sandretto spent only on e lap of the second moto get ting to the he ad of the pack and then left it behind.. Again Richter DN Fed and Sw artz m oved in t o seco nd for half of the race un til Ted Rogers (Hus) passed him. Toward th e en d of th e race Randy Losh went by Swartz to take th ird. Th e single Expert pay off in th e Op en class went to John Kent (Bul) with a first and a third finish . Rogers (Hus) was co m ing up from a last pl ace start in the first moto but DNFed leaving it to Kent, then won the second moto . • Resul Is in Results Section. Danny Turner comes home to clean up on locals By Sallee Hilton PL YMOUTH, CAL., SEPT. 2 8 The rum or was circulating through the pits early in the morning, that Danny Turner . had come home. Although many had doubts that 30 the rumors were true , Danny did show up, along with h is D&G partner Dave Williams, and both of them gave a real show . At the start of the first 250 Expert moto , four riders pulled out in front immediately: Williams, J ohn Franklin (Hus), Turner and Brian Jodry (Mon). Before the en d of the lap the D&G Yamahas were out in front, Williams with a slight lead and Turner closing the gap until a bobble put him ba ck to third. Franklin briefly was in first place, Williams had a problem with the bike and was back to fourth. Meanwhile, Dave Longcor (Bul) m oved up finally p assing J o~ry, then ta king on Williams and passmg him . The built up momentum took him pa st Turner, but not for long. Longcor and Turn er had both passed Franklin and were lapping th e back of the pac k wh en Tu rne r took over the lead, and, would you believe , reach ed o ut an d shook hands with Longcor as he went by! , The start of the sec ond moto affec ted the rac e ve ry much. A crash, rig h t off the line , injure d several riders includ ing Longcor, who stuffed his broken foot back into his boot and restarte d . Turner star ted o u t . in front an d st ayed there. Williams, running second for half the race , was taken by a de termined J odry , who th en went after Turn er, b u t wa s un able to ca t ch him. Longcor finished in fourth pl ace , and Charles Halc omb fifth. Turner added tw o more wins in the 125 motos to take the top money in tha t class to o. In the fir st moto it was Williams and Turner, w ay o ut front and tr ad ing places occasionally, until Williams blew a ro d . This left T urn er alon e out front and Lon Wardell (Hon), who had been running third all the way , second. Wardell's swingarm bolt came o ff in the last lap, and he was forced to give up. Mike Marquez (Hon) was next in line for second at th e checkered flag with Jim Lesn iewski (Yam) third, Robert Norton (Hon) : fourth, and Cloyse Holland, Jr. (Su z) fifth. Finishing sixth was David Wood (Yam) who had come up from 2 2n d in the first lap . Migh ty little "Magoo " had not been able to keep his Yamaha running in the first m o to , and made only one stop and ~o lap. In the second m oto, Magoo (Danny Chandler) was on a borrowed Yamaha and fly ing the course in first place followed by Holland and Turner in the first lap : Then Turner started gaining, passing Holland and moving up on Magoo. , As the spectators were preparing to place bets on their favo rite s, Magoo crashed hard, able to get ba ck in the race, but now in last place and hurting. Next to follow Turner was David Ernst (Hon), with Holland third and Wood fourth. Fifth was being fought over between Kevin Henry (Bul) and Robert Norton. The o rder st ayed the same 'fo r the rest of the race with Henry gelling the fifth. Ward ell and Lesniewski had crashed and finished far back ; Magoo moved up to 12th. Luckily for Longcor the Open Expert race was run before the 250 so he had already finished both motos of the big bike class when he hurt his foot. And he had finished in style - two firsts and way ou t in fron t after the initial dicing with Perry Klassen (CZ) in the first moto and ' Ted Rogers (Hus) in the second. • Results in Results Section.
