SEPT . 24 Kim Apling was hot all night as she showed th e mini class what it's all about by taking alI three m ot os on th e OCIR track. In the first mini mota, Bobby Day ie (Y a m) to ok th e l ead with Peter Loncalevien (Rup) on his tail, Kim was back in third. In th e seco nd turn Peter was overtaken by ,Kim . Dayie held the lead for another half- a-lap, At this point Kim took over and didn't mess around as she opened it up and left the rest of the pa ck trailing in her dust to take the win. The remaining two mo tos were of the same variety. Kim won both of them to take th e overall. . Mark Tyer and Ron Turn er made it a go in all three m otos of the 125 Pro class, with Tyer takin g the win, Turner second. • Results in Re sul ts Section. Val Tamietti (~lai ) stayed righ t on Vidi c 's tail as th ey diced it out for the entire first mota, but Vidic took the win. Bill Rubly (C· A) and Mike Steams (Suz) battled for th ird and fourth posit ions with Rubly m an aging to keep Steams a t ba y. ta king th ird . Mike Steams turned in t hre e fo urth place finishes for fourth o verall. Vidic played the sam e winning game in mota two and took t he overall with a t hird place finish in the last 'mo ta . The King of the Hill ra ce turned into a kick-off between J oe J ohnston (Mai) a n d Jeff J ennings (Bul ). J ennings knoc ked J ohnston over as they were going in to o ne of th e final turns, an d J o h n ston was very sm oo t h a s he g rabbed J ennings and brough t him do wn too . The two were not ex actly on friendly' terms wh en the y return ed to th e pits fo llo wing t he race. Th e 125 Pr o class was dominat ed by Gary Dento n (Han) gett ing th e holeshot in all three races for the win. The second ~ l Pro race had Dan Barnes (CZ) off to a good start with Jeff Jennings righ t , ch ind . Jennings got by as Barnes endoe d off the Ber t 's jump and lim Wyant (Mai) foll owed su it with a spec tac ular endo o n t he last lap. IRViN E. Vidic does it again at Irwindale By Jon Hay t IRW INDALE, CAL., SEPT. 26 Night mot ocross racin g at Irwindale is going stro ng as top Cl\IC Pro s battle down to th e wire for end of seaso n poin ts. Jeff Vidie, 40 cur ren t p oints leader, ha s taken th e 25 0 Pro clas s fo r tw o co nsecutive week s by winning five of th e six mo tos he has en te re d. In the ac tion packed 250 Pro class, f- > et J: Z a ~ > lD VI a fa if It all star ted wi th the ladies and as usu al , J oh anna Stenersen (0 & G Han) and Sue Fish (Cro wn Cycle Monoshock] wer e way o ut in the le ad. Second rno to, Johanna got off hard - in fact so bad th at fellow rider Gale Webb stopped to help and forfeited a high Amateur finish . Cherry Stockton moved into second , only to ungracefully crash into a fence. Jim Connolly go t it together in the Op en Expert! Amateur race. Randy Belvin s held th e lead in mota one while Connoll y an d Tim Sh ook vi ed for second both ended up crash ing, and the wh ole pac k got by . Con nolly picked hims el f up and passed them all back to regain h is second pl ac e p osition ! Second m ot a , saw Co nnolly and Belvins at it again with Jim lead ing, un til his Bultaco lock ed in secon d gear; so he n ursed it to the finish . Then Belvin 's bike quit all of a sudden. He man aged to get it rest arted . but not in time to ca tc h Andy Bolander. Po ulcs to o k the overall win. Ever yo ne clammered to wat ch the sidehacks barrel aro und the hilly co urse and To m Rid yard 's super-powerf ul Kawasa ki 750 shot into th e lead , but not for long. The bike has a notorious reputa tion fo r spitting off pas sengers . Even brawn y Rich ard Ilar ad a bai led off on e tim e to o man y and in moto two, Miles Stricti and climbe d aboard in his place. Bart Crandel and Ron Swart took t he ove ral l win with l • o rm Monahan and Whe eler second. You 've got to cred it the desert riders th at showed up. Even th ou gh t hey weren 't in the b rass, they su re tried . Most o f the bikes weren 't set-up for a motocro ss course, in fac t . some o f th em still had o n their big ta n ks. Several of th e Viewfinders had been rib bing Paul Kell eh er , official starter, abou t ge tting hitch ed to Thelma Lou , one o f the distric t Powderpuffer s, Th e, result was motocr oss ' answer to th e "shot gun " wedding . .. a " Ho le shot" wedding staged on t he line, co mp lete with veiled helmet an d a bouquet of Preston Petty posies ! • Results in Results Section.
