T on y held off th e advances o f bo th Weinert and Howerton for ten laps , then Weinert slipped by Tony, a nd Ton y crashed trying to re gain the lead. With T ony De e out o f th e way , both Jimmy and Kent kept th e gas on as they battled for first and Jim Pomeroy m ov ed in fo r th ird. DeCoste r st aged o ne o f hi s fan tastic co m e-fro m -beh ind tricks an d sto p wat ch tim e showed Roger to be cl o sing on Pomeroy at th e rat e of two seconds per lap . J im wa s havin g trouble shi fting h is Bultaco and co u ld n't keep Rog er back. With j u st a lap to go , Ro ger fle w by Pomero y and began reeling in Wein ert and Ho werto!!:... Chargin g toward th e ch ec kere d flag and the las t few tu rns on t he track, DeC oster had m ad e up a distance of 100 y ards on both Weinert an d Ho wer to n to be banging of f their re ar fenders. Weinert m ad e a lun ge with his Yamaha, full th rottle into the last tum, an d almos t overshot it , braked h ard and almo st h igh sided , then id led the al most lo aded-up 400 Yamah a acr os s the lin e fo r th e wi n . Howerton had to panic stop to avoid cen te r-p u nch in g Jimmy in th e tum and lo st e nough momentum to let th e Jammer beat h im acro ss th e line . DeCoster opted to take th e outside line around Jimmy as he floundered in the t um. It co st Roger valua ble yards to the ch ec ke red, and J immy too k th e flag firs t by no mo re th an ten fee t over Kent and Ro ger, It was a fan tastic ending t o a su per day o f racing , with Pome roy fin ish ing th e mo to in fourth ah ea d o f Lackey , Ma rty Tripes, and Ge rri t Wo lsin k. J im m y Weinert was t he first American to eve r wi n a Trans-A.l\ A, l ra ce wh ic h was Houst on in 19 73. With J im Pome ro y having taken th e win last wee k in Geo rgia, The J am mer called Ohio, "two fo r America! Th e "Jammer" stoked his Bill Buch kap rep ared factory Yamah a to victory in the second 45-minu te m o to to take the overall win ahead o f last week's wi n ner, J im Pomeroy on a Bultaco , and Su zu ki ' s four-time World Champion, Ro ger DeC oster. In th e 250cc S up port class, J im my Ellis rode his Can-Am to a repeat win o f . his Ro ad Atlanta performance b y again wi nning both m oto s to take o ut a la rge lead in th e se ries, Honda 's Ric h Eierste dt was a roc ke tshi p durin g m o st of the race , but claimed n ot to be fully in tune fr o m h is long ra ce -inj ury lay off th is year, and h ad t o se t tle fo r seco nd at th e en d o f th e day ah ead- of T im Ha rt's Yam ah a. First 500cc Mota 16 Marty Smith blew everyone 's mind as he wh eelied his factory RG Ho nda t o th e lead of the firs t moto ah ead of J im Pomeroy, J im West an d Gary Chaplin. Pomeroy st ayed with Smith, and th e tw o proceeded to bl ast away from th e rest o f the field at a p ace th at gave th em a 5 0 0-yard lead b y the e nd of ten laps. Te am Suzuki's ch ances go t off to a very bad start as bo th Ro ger DeC o st er and Gerrit Wolsin k were left way in th e back o f the 3 5-bike fiel d. Both began to work th eir way, but DeC o st er was hampered b y slower riders and stal led o u t h is bik e twice . Wol sink said later, " I never fel t too go o d al l day . I just seem ed to ge t more and more tire d. H At th e halfway point, Pom eroy passed Smith fo r th e lead , b ut crashe d a lap later wh en th e fro n t of hi s Bultaco wash ed out in a tum. Bra d fe ll on the first lap and stalled his bike, th en later in the race so me prototype Eu rope an gas sh oc ks he h ad on his Hu sky went bad . He changed to Fox Shocks fo r the second rnoto , b ut didn't see m .ex cit ed enough to rid e harder than fifth . Marty Tri pes got a flat t ire on h is Bultaco .
