Clifford Mathews (Kaw) wound up the first mota of 125 Am ateurs with a clean sweep and left Brad Wootten,Jim Strain, an d Gary Kaitukoff trying to squ e e ze in to second with Wooten win ning o u t. Jim Speigle sped off on his YZ in mota two an d did a job on the rest of th e p ack. Mathews finished wi th a second. Th e last moto brought o n a another new leader as Woote n battled with Sp eigle on every lap holding off th e cha llenge to st ay in front . Woo ten to ok the tr ophy . Novices get'it on at Corona By Elaine Jones Cliff Whetstone has just about reached graduation by putting together tw o victories in the 2 50 Novice short track an d half mile. Another double winner was Rick Blankenship. In the 125 half mile , Rick snatched it all awa y at the las t possible second leaving Marty Woodbury second and Tom Gates third. On the short track Rick and h is 100cc Kawasaki topped Bill Viust and Cliff Whetstone. Marty Woodbury garnered 12 5 Novice honors ove r Robert Pfetzing - and J DC Breedlove. Mi k e Tidwell tu rned in another o u tstan di ng performance, riding five and winning five. Bot h the 125 Expert short track and half m ile fe ll to Mike . Danny Per kins and Freddy Conover were second and th ird in the short trac k and Troy Fishe r and Fred Conovej secon d an d th ird on the half mile. On to the 250 Expert short track and ha lf mile with Greg Zehner an d Terry Statum foll owing Mik e home on both. The final win for Ti dw ell cam e in the 250 Expert Twi n but second place Bill Cain stole the sho w com ing from last place to finish seco nd . They were so close a blanket could ea sily have been thrown over all three of t he m, b ut Sweaney finally grabbed th e edge and the win with Bird taking sec o nd and Calicchio third. . Don Frauenberger was o n hand for the Open Exp ert hal f mi le an d everyone in his class w as well aw ar e of this fact. Despite a bad start, in th e first mota at Indian Dunes Raceway , J o nes sliced his Honda through th e pack to challenge third plac e rider Bob Kline (Han) before the chec kered flag fell. Jones rocketed off th e line in seco nd pl ace , at the seco nd mo to st art righ t behind And>: Jenni ngs (Ha n ). But it was Mike Pillar (Han) who wo n overall with a third and a second. Gary Huber was seco nd ove rall and J ones thi rd . Lane Crandell bulldozed h is Beezer to an impressive th ird in h is first 500 Class mota.
