Double Crossers dial in error, Spurlock dials • • In win By Larry Langley LUCERNE VALLEY, OCT. 5 Riders In the third annual Cal State 100 Enduro were surprised when they pulled up to the speedometer check on the first loop and found themselves .2 and .3 miles off. That's about a 10 percent d ' tume d outv i was as It out, It deliberate, The Double Crossers err<;>r an M/C used a speedometer that they knew would produce the error. The idea was to give the riders a little more to cope with and had many so-called timekeepers climbing the walls, Comments ranged fro m unprintable to "So what, a good enduro rider should be ab le to co mpensate." Another factor in the dialed-in error is that it made the di stances further than the actual mileage. In other words, a 24 mph average was actually close to 26 mph. The first loop was dull and dusty. Not much can be said for it other than it was a t hankfully short 28 miles. C riders rode only the first loop and I hope they don't think all first lo o p s are like that. Five C riders zeroed the loop but th e tiebreaker check was not co m p u ted by press time. The riders ar e G. Swetland on a 450 Kawasaki, Rick Mourek on a 250 Yamaha, Doug Cox riding a 360 Bulraco, Terry Blumen thai on a 250 Kawasaki and Richard Durette . on a 360 Bultaco. So fellas, hold your breath, one of you is going to be Number One. The second loop was in direct contrast to the first. It was a good. long loop of 44 interesting and challenging miles. Actually the loop was run like most eastern enduros in that the lo op was set up to route the ri ders through a tough. tight section designed t o get them behind time. throw a check and le t them out on a fireroad to catch back up before the next tight, tough section . The Double Crossers laid out so me fin e terrain marred only by some skim py marking in a couple of sections. Most riders got lost once or twice. The last few miles were really tough to make as the course wound up through the hills bordering Anderson Dry Lake at a fast 24 mph average . On ly one rider zeroed the check but a lo o k at his score card had him a fat seven minutes early at the check before. He certainly didn't start on time from there . When the dust had cleared, 250 Husky rider Tom Spurlock lost o nly three points to unofficially ~!1. t.h~ <;;'!J
