; III • ~ AMC 125 Intermediate action at OCIR E By Ernest Coleman I"""'l 10 t0'1 ~ EAST IRVINE, CAL., SEPT. 10 0 Cary Stophel (Hon) took the overall win in 125 Intermediate action with some of the most mixed up racing of the night. In the first Q(') '"' V .c S moto Mark Marriott (Hon) and Jonny Clopton (Hon) shot out of the gate at the same time, with Mike Raines (Yam) and Ken Morgan (Yam) right behind. On the third lap , Clo pton lost his chain, putting him out of the moto, giving the Ie ad to Marriott and Raines, with Morgan in third. Morgan tried to move up but Raines wouldn't open the door. At this point, Rodney Davidson (Kaw) passed Morgan and tried to get by Raines, bu t he couldn't qui te make it. At the end of moto one, it was Marriott, Raines, and Davidson with Morgan in fourth. The second moto saw three new riders come into the picture . As the gate went down, Cary Stophel (Hon) who had taken eighth in the las t moto, shot out of the gate like his bike was on fire, with Pat Delligatta (Hon), Robert Hersinger (Ka w ) and Pat Nash (Hon ) br e athing down his neck. Stophel turned on the gas going into the second lap , leavin g the three fighting it out for second. It was a three man race to the finish, with Stophel out front, Morgan in second and Delligatta right on his back wheel in third. The third moto , Clopton holeshot the gate with Hersinger close behind, Stophel in third. As t he three men blasted into the third tum, three riders passed Clop ton, giving the lead to Stophel, Hersinger taking over second, Morgan third, leaving Clopton in fourth. On the ,fourth lap Morgan went down, movi ng Clopton and Delligatta up, and it was Stophe1, Hersinger, Delligatta and Clopton at the finish. The count looked like this, Stophel eight-one-one for the overall win, Delligatta five-three-eight for second, Hersinger seven-rive-two for third and Morgan with four-two-nine. • Results in Results Section. V 00 CRC DeAnza super series Part II By Gus SUNNYI\1EAD, CAL., SEPT. 14 Greg St one (Yam) had his hands full today, riding a new track against a full ho use of riders in the 250 Novice class. Despite all this, he still won all three motos easily. Larry Minor (Mai) and John Mitchell (Bul) were tied for second going into the last moto. Both were riding WFO until they played the tango, ea ting a lot of dirt. They quickly regained their composure and continued their battle right to the checkered flag, with Minor taking se cond spot only inches ahead of Mitchell, who had to settle for third overall. The Expert and Intermediate classes were bulging at the seams today with the 125s charging off to battle first. Floyd Burk, Jr. (Yam ) ran away with the Expert class, winning both motos handily . Behind Burk, Mark Lawrence (Yam) and Pete Hillebrecht (Hon) were only one point apart going into the second and final moto , but it was Lawrence going all the way to take second place cash. Hillebrecht was being pressured hard by Keith Patten going into the final laps, but Patten retired with s cooter problems leaving Hillebrecht with th ird place cash. The 1 2 5 I nterm ed iate race was another close go . Clint Carman (Hon) took the first moto with a lot of So we only run pies of the Pros huh ? This is Henry Sorcelli (115) . taking 5th in 125 Beginner dass at 395 MX. so there . pressure from Gary Scheidler (Yam). Second moto action saw Scheidler take the holeshot and put his Yammie into the lead for the entire m o to , to win the class . Carman rode to second in the moto and se cond overall. Steve Sparks moved into third in the final moto, with a three-four tally for the day. In the 125 Novice class it was Honda mounted Mar ty Smith, taking the win, ahead of Dwight Wilkinson and Tim Hoole, both on Yarnahas. • Results in Results Section. Brass, cash & pizza at 395 MX By Phil Carpenter ADELANTO, CAL., SEPT. 14 Bernie Unhassobiscay, (Hon) taking on 18 125 Beginners , carried home first place brass, plus a free pizza in the winner's drawings, taking his win with two steady seconds and a first. 395 newcomer Danny East (Yam) too k second 'p lace brass, but t he real competitio n was be tween Henry Sorcelli, Mark ' Clark (Hon) an d Rex Murdock with ties fo r t he third sp ot. The 125 Novice was one-two all the way between Mike Prothro (Suz) and Charlie Mazzei , (Suz) as Allen Hoover (Hon) grabbed it from Ken Willis on the last moto for t hird p lace brass. When the gree n flag fell on the third moto of the 100 Novice race, Steven Byrd (Suz) and Sam Goldsmith (Suz) each had three points, but Sam gassed the screaming Suzuki to the finish with the hard-driving Byr d wai ti ng for a mistake that neve r . ca me. In 100 Beginner action, Jeff Hollie (Yam) creamed h is c o m p e t i ti o n while neighbors, Robert Land (Hod) and Jerome Ward (Suz), turned it on for second spot. Land had it in his pocket till h is sick scooter sat down in the last lap o f the las t m o to . The 250 Novice go was a two-man duel between Steve Evans (Suz) and John Lovett (Bul) whiie Ho nda mounted Dan Rucker swe pt the 25 0 Beginners fo r a graduation card to Novice. With scores tied, Mark Blavet (Yam) and St eve n Scalzo (Hus) pl ayed checkers fo r second sp o t in th e criti cal third moto of 250 Beginners action until Blavet took the lead in lap three. The 250 Expert was o ne-two-three all the way with Tracy Wal te rs (Yam) taking top hono rs. The Open Exp ert class was the closest of the day, with the to p four riders having five po ints each as the starter waved them off on the third moto , Don Simonian's Maic o took the lead, and first p lace cash, while Rick Larson (Mai) edged o u t Rich Barnes (Yam) o n lap two for the second spo t. Kevin Bowman (Hon) picked up a graduation card to Novice and ,first place brass in Mini Beginner competition over hard-driving David Jeffrey (Hon) and David Smith. Allen Ho ppe r (Hon) took Mini Novice honors, but it wasn 't easy wi th neigh bor Te rry Wick (Ho n) eating hi s tires. • Results in Results Section. 39 "'
