A handlebar -rattling, wal l-smacking trio battled for second right at his heels with Tony Nova (Yam) taking sec ond, Billy Oliver (Tri) th ird and Diane Cox (Tri) fourth . The sportsmen had their share of tr o uble as Rick Burnett took the wall in the 25 0 class and came up with a broken collarbone. The 100cc class was a cliffhanger right to th e finish, with Bob Skolaski (Yam) and John Wincewicz (Hon) going a t it tooth and toenail. Wincewicz stuffed his Honda into the lead just in time to take the checker. In the 400cc ,Pro final, Brad Hurst grabbed a holeshot with Lester Huey hangi ng right in behind him. Billy Oliver (Yam) got kind of a , b um start but set out working his way up through the pack. Bul taco ri der Phil Pfau left the battle out through turn one's haybales, Oliver, Steve Toftdaul (Yam) and Randy Scott settled into a three-way battle for third with Oliver coming out on top , Toftdaul fourth and Randy getting bumped out o f the battle entirely by Hond a-mounted Rick Waters. Hurst repeated his act in the Open class as he won the first corner closely chas ed by Yamaha-moun te d Tony Nova, Tri umph-mounted Billy Oliver, and both the Legarra brothers, Mark and Larry on Triumphs trying to decide who was fo urth. Larry Legarra slipped by Oliver b ut could only h old it fo r a co uple o f laps before Billy got back by. As t hey ca me down to the wire Oliver nipped Nova for second. Hurst, who co llected a tidy $300 fo r his nig ht 's work, stretched out a gigantic lead . • Results in Resu lts Section. Joyner tops Sidewinder Championship By Jerry Mathel Mark Legarra the night before (Septe mber 6) pulled his Triumph out of t he infe rno in th e backg round, won his heat on t he restart. CLACKAMAS, O RE ., SEPT. 5 With many of the Northwest p ros home for the weekend, the Sidewinders T rac k Ch amp ionsh ip fielded a hos t of Ex perts including - -.. 26 six National numbers. The track was super-fast with nine riders q ualifying under 15 seconds. Charlie Brown (Tri), who holds the track record , tu rned in the fast time at 14.58. The Novice Trophy Dash went to Ken Celo rie (Yam) after Dick Wooton (Yam) too k a heavy highside unload at the to p of the hill. Brad Hurst (Tri) nailed down the Junior Trophy Dash ahead of Triumph-mounted Steve Eason. Charlie Brown and Norton-mounted Darrell Hendrickson swapped the lead several times before Hendrickson slipped off t he groove and gave the win to Brown, in the Expert Dash. National number 95 , Ricky Graves, took th e lead in the Expert Semi w ith Tri umph riders Diane Cox and Randy Skiver battling for second. Ski ver took o ve r as Diane 's engine went sour, putting her out of the race . The Novice Final started out like a repeat of the Trophy Dash as Ken Celorie again grabbed the lead with Dick Wooton right on his heels. Randy Thomspon 's Bultaco seized righ t at the top of t he hill co mpletely resh uffling the back of the pack. Lon Bently (Yam) and Don Faber (Bul) settled down to battle for third wi th a very determined Lester Huey (Bul) ready to take over if they made the slightest mistake. Then fate struck again as Celorie lost his pipe When the flag wen t down on the Expert Final, Castle Rock National win ner Ch uck Joyner (Tri) was never challenged for the lead . The battle was between the Triumphs of Randy Scott and Don Dodge, for second place. Don Smith (Tr i) made a run on the leaders which netted hi m a very heavy unload at the' top of the hill. Meanwhile , fast qualifier Charlie Brown had moved up in to fo urth. As they came on to the white flag Randy Scott went absolu te ly bananas. It was a pace Dodge couldn't or w o uldn't h old so Scott lai d clai m to second be hind J oyn er who had an enormous lead. • Results in Resu lts Section. Crummett wails at Pioneer semi-final By An n Carr OAKDALE , CAL., SE PT . 6 Rider turnout was down but competition remained stiff at Pioneer Arena's semi-final 1975 short track. With one event remaining, and seized co ming down the hill. Wooton got by Celorie 's crossed up Bul, on ly to smack the wall at the bottom. Again the cards were shuffled as riders went every which way looking for a hole. Lon Bently took the wall trying to mi ss Wooton. When the dust cleared, the lead was held by Honda-mounted Terry Seal, with Huey running second fo llowed by Tom Moore (Yam) . Brad Hurst ro cketed into the lead in the Junior Final, closely chase d by Billy Oliver (Tri). Olive r was quickly passed by Yamaha-mounted Rob Gore b ut not for long as Billy re-passed. Meanwhile, a ba ttle raged for fourth between the Triumphs of Phil Pfa u and Dave Howard. ' Oliver no w began to pressure Hurs t and took over the lead which he stretched out to the finish . With hiswin over Hurst, Oliver had cap tured the track cham p ion ship by one point. While Oliver was m aking his move on Hurst, Tri umph-mounted Steve Eason was also moving up th rough the pack to finish third. 13 of 22 class championships are st ill up for grabs as well as the overall title of "King of Pioneer for ' 75." Ted Davidson of Modesto who rides fo r Happy House Massage, Thiel Motors, a n d Blendzall Corporation na rrowly ' leads for royal honors but is closely co n tested by Kiser Brothers Honda ace Carl Yerby, Modesto Harley- Davidson racer Dwayne Ellis, and mini Experts Don How ard of Clovis and Doug Chandler of Salin as.
