Kids classes went to a 'D' Main which Robert J oh n so n won and transferred from. In the 'C ' he went fro m a second ro w start to first p lace in half a lap an d of course, transferred out of there. He did some fine riding from a thi rd ro w of the B but wasn't able to take over one of t he firs t th ree tro phy slots. There was a 125 'D' Mai n which Bu tch Coc hran won, he also won the problem-ridden 'C' where six ou t o f seven were down at leas t once. Co chran kept o n worki ng and Rich La Ru e tr ied to stop him in the ' B'. La Rue was hed a rear wheel in tum one, slid as he was spinning and his t hrottle st uck full o pen . T he •A' Main line was a bear .. . besides Cochran there sa t Rich Word, Dan Horton, MiJ<.e Bishop , Cecil Arispe and Brian Peterson. They made it a close race all the way ,and when the d ust settled, there was Friendly Phil Harless in Number One. The 250 class was a big one with a crowded 'C '; 10 in the 'B '; and 12 in the 'A ', Brian Peterson left no doubt as to first place and the race to watch wa s between Rich Word and Ray Dugan. Their machines were evenly matched, Dugan rode Word's backend for eight long laps but could not find a clear road and Word made no mistakes. Twelve left the line on the Open 'C ' start, two went down in the second left and Dan Mc Farland got into a bad one after tangli ng with over-eage r Bob Thorpe. Lonnie Foster transferred to the 'B' where he started from a thi rd row. Joe McWhorter went down in the second le fte r and another rider bo unced over him . MeWhorter was taken in for possible broken ribs. Mike Branam began to stretch a lead, leaving Jeff Hurd, Fos ter and Frank Wo rd trailing. Word was forced wide on th e inside left putting h im in fo urth. He rode hard on the o the r two turns, tried a run on the sweeper but got ac ed ou t. Bac k into the inside and on tha t sam e inside corner the front two forced each othe r wide and Word was waiting. He cranked it open and shot by, then stretched for second. The A Main featu red 11 bi kes and the fron t three were flying. Jeff Campbell got off in number one but Butch Cochran found inside runni ng room and turned it on with a co m fo rt ab le lead in the usual Cochran style . . . settin' straight up and ridin' flat out. Campbell held down number two with Mike Branum close and waiting for one mistake. Campbell, on a 360, bobbled on th at same tight inside left and Branam, on a 750, was ready. He whipped by and wasn 't to be tagged again. • Results in Results Section.
