Warren Reid takes off. flying high for the 125 Pro win at CMC Saddleback. Bomb" drove his trick-quick 750 Triumph around the true half-mile at 27.90 seconds. Traction was perfect for Randy Griffith's third race at 395 Cycle Park. The green light flashed for the Open Expert Main, with Laney 's 750 Yamaha taking the lead to the finish . Spectators screamed and the stop watch read 27.75 as number one again earned the track record. Closest Open Expert cornpetmon was the TT action between 750 Triumph mounted AI Renz and Mark Fitzgerald. Mark took the lead on lap two holding it until Renz passed him on lap eigh t for the finish, In separate 500 Expert action, "Slide -f o r - Life " Sanders and TIm Bowers played checkers for the lead with Sander's Yamaha pulling away in lap five for the cash. In the half-mile 500 Ex pert Main , it was Eddie Lawson, aboard one of those Jones ', pulling away from Sanders in lap two for the brass. with Steve Bennett (Kaw) on their wheels. A pileup in lap one of the 500/Open Amateur IT Main left only John Wells (Yam) up and running and Donnie Curd feeling unwanted, w hen being used for competitors traction. Restarts saw Lonnie Martin's Vespa taking Amateur honors over Pat Gordon (Tri) while Jim Russell (Yam) fought with Ted Share 's Triumph for the separate 500 brass. The half-mile Mains showed Lo nnie Martin (Ve spa) taking double wins in Open competition aria Nor m Blake (Yam) taking his first trophy in 395's 500 Amateur competition. 250 Expert action was hot and heavy with half-mile winner Sh awn Leipold (Yam) playing with Randy Bird 's Yamaha while Randy Bowsman (Yam) drove hard looking for an opening. Randy edged out Terry Statum and Randy Griffith for IT honors. All of the Novice classes were double wins except for the Open Novice wh en first-timer Dean Hammett took the lead from Gordon Moore o n the nighttime IT course and Dana Anderson wrapped up the half-mile. • Results in Results Section. Reid takes charge of CMC Saddleback By Joel Jam ieson IRVINE, CAL., SEPT 7 Honda mounted Warren Reid didn't win a single moto in the 125 Pro class but took home the winner's share of $135. Warren put together two consisten t second place rides to ace a strong field of 125 Pro screamers. Reid got the holeshot in the first moto with DG fast cat, Broc Glover second and Danny LaPorte (Fra) third. Another DG racer, Dave Williams (Yam) was back in sixth but he quickly moved up to challenge Reid for the number one spot. Williams slipped past Reid for the lead, Reid wanted to race and regained first. Williams dropped back which allowed Broc Glover to move back into second and CMC number one, Mike Bell, moved in to third aboard his Long Beach Honda, as the top three riders put a lot of space between them and the rest of the pack. Bell put his L.B. Honda into first as Reid and Glover dropped off the pace. The second moto started out much the same with Reid taking command from the start. Danny LaPorte, who had ignition troubles in th e first round, too k It's not the white knight. an d it's n ot Yankee Doodle. so it m ust be Randy Blevins taking second 500 Intermedi ate at CMC Saddleb ack. over the lead on the second lap. Warren didn 't need the moto win so he just settled down in second. Meanwhile , Bell moved his machine into third, right behind Reid. Reid held him off for the rest o f the race to take home the cash . Young Bultaco Bullet, Jeff Jenning aced out a strong field of 250 Pros, while U.S . Suzuki racer Bob Hannah really gave Jeff a run for his money . The pack came around for the first lap with Hannah leading but Jim Ruth went down hard in lap two and ended up with his head in between the rear tire and the fender. His head was stuck and they had to cut the frame in o rder to free him. Officials called for a restart and the closing laps showed, Han nah leading wi th DG team-mate Dave Williams (Yarn) close in second. Williams pushed ahead for the lead and the two really diced until Dave lost a chain . Hannah won the race with Jennings pulling second, Bill Clements third. Second moto, Hannah once again took charge but - lo o k out - here comes Jenning. Coming out of the gully, it was J enn ing and Hannah side-by-side. J enning moved to the far outside, leaving Hannah no where to go but off the track. Hannah braked and Jeff gassed it for the lead taking the moto win and the overall aboard h is Norm Reeves Bultaco. Hannah picked up second place money and Val Tamietti pulled his TNT Maic o in to third overall". Jim West (Mai) took top honors in the 500 Pro class . Doug Sherman rode consistently to a second place in each moto on a Wheelsmith Maico while Mike Flanagan took third place money on yet another Maico, _ Mark. Popel riding his RM 3 70 to a c o u p l e of firsts, swept the 500 In termedia te race while Randy Blevins took his Bike Shop CZ to second m the bike's first race. Pro's Practice at Elsinore By Andi Gangewer ELSINORE, CAL., AUG. 23 Ed Gabler (Yam) shot off the line and around the first tum holding Chris Choiser to second in the first 125 Beginner heat, bu t both transfered directly to the Main , In the second heat Thomas Ferrell .(Yam) was up fron t leading the pack o f I25's, with Doug Bean (Yam) right behind for th e last transfer sp ot to the Main. Phillip Popp (Yam) took charge of the Semi for the checkered in front of Jimmy Wright. Terry Fulton (Yam) and Oscar Ferrer (Yam) were last transfers to the Main. The Main event was easy pi cken's for Doug Bean . Pop p and Gabler were giving each other fits for second but when the checkered dropped it was Popp second, Gabler third and Bean long gone in first. Bean and Popp took home a new Novice ranking. Charlie Summers (YZ), showing what consistancy can do for y ou, was firs t off, leading the whole race, with Mike TIdwell (Yam) the number one District 37 rider close behind. Both transfered directly to the Special Expert Main . In the second heat it was Eddie Beeson (Yam) and Rich Plueger (Yam) going di rec tly to the Main and Kirk Doyle, a (Continued on page 38) 21
