Local hotline rider, Minis and Women's Division went o ne loop, "C" riders rode loops one and two and "B" an d HAn riders rode all three, The first lo op h ad an average speed of 18 mph over terrain of sand and whoopdie-doos, following the small ridge of vo lcanie rock north east of Soggy Dry Lake, incorporating sections of past ORA and District 37 European s crambles courses. This area really suffers from the BLM's forced overuse policy. Loop two was very easy, or that 's what you thought for the first few m iles, only to realize all too soon why i t's ca lle d the Gully Whomper. It seemed like most of the second lo op was agai nst the grain, co ntin ually crossing wa ter run-o ff gullies, runnin g from th e pits no rth of Soggy Dry Lake, n orth to where it p ieked up a san dwas h and headed the riders toward Hobb Well. It took off through so me small hills back toward the pits. On the third loop the CRC did n o t want the ri ders to w o rry abou t having to d o dge any roc ks, so they sim p ly piled all the rocks in to one valley and ran the cou rse right thro ugh it . Mo st "A" rider s really enjoyed this section, receiving the challenge they h ad been see king. Things settled down until near the end of the loop when it was necessary to conq ue r the infamous lava flow by Soggy Dry Lake in order to be checked. Th e International Rac ing Radio Crew was monitoring the co urse at all times, doing their usual super job. The vo lunteers of IRRC ar e the type of pe ople that desert riding is all abo u t. I found out th at they do a great job of rescuing Cycle News reporters too. • Resul ts in Resul ts Section. Root, Hansen Dice at Dunes Night MX By Denise Bearshear VALENCIA , CA L., SEPT. 5 With everyone wondering about how the new Suzuki 370 handles, Fran k Giard ina set a pretty good exam ple in the 500 Expert class. Runnin g away with the lead in th e second mo to, h aving taken third in the fi r s t d ue to je ttin g pro blems, th e Su zu k i ' s o ve r-abundan ce o f power see med a bit hard to han dle fo r his first time ou t on the bi ke. Russ McAfee (Bul) p assed Frank half-way though, fo r second ove rall. Giardina killed the S u z uk i at the bottom of the big drop-a-way on the In te rnational track, losin g out completely. Mike Sixberry (Mai) came thro ugh for the overall win, with Strayer (CZ) in third. J oe Root (Ossa) and Donny Hansen (Mai) left a pack of 250 Experts trailing as they diced it out to th e finish, Hansen took the first m o t o , with Root edging him out in the second moto for the win. Tassano (Mai) hung in then: fo r a consistent third. The best looking class of the evening was the combined 125 Ex~erts and Intermediates. Jerry Shore (Hon), an Intermediate, outrode the Experts to the overall win. Close on his tail were Honda m oun ted Egerman first Expert and Miller second Expert. The chieks had the guys worried as Rh e Gliemi (Hon) kept her pig tail flyin g all the way t o the checkered, ta king an im pressive second over all in th e 125 Beginner class. Janene Turton (Bul) made a comeback in the 125 Jun io r class, after three months of recuperating fro m a knee operation. Disp roving th e common bel ief that deser t racers can't t urn co rn ers Mark St eel e man eu vered h is sled (big tank and all) to a second mo to win in the 250 Begin ner class. No t far behind was still another desert ace , Paul Shaw. .. proving the belief! In the 500 Ju nior class Bob Mills, aboard a Yamaha Monoshock, daz zled every one with his start. His front wheel never touc he d the ground all the way up th e sta rt hill until he turned the first corn er. Heading down the straight-away wasn't quite as eventful as Keeler (Su z) put the pass on him. Keeler was later passed by Dixon (Yam), the overall vic t o r. Definitely the favorite crash site of th e nigh t was the finish line, more specifically, abou t two yards in fron t of it. See, there was this hole that liked to grab front wheels . .. and needless to say, a lot of guys took the checkered minus their bike ! • Results in Results Section.
