Desert , desert, all around and pretty soon nowhere t o ride? Smith, Hannah, & Eierstedt invade CMC Carlsbad By Mike Yada CARLSBAD, CAL, SEPT. 14 The "Big Guns" returned from their National battles and provided the fans at CMC Carlsbad with some of the hottest racing all year. Marty Smith continued his seemingly endless win streak by taking the 125 Pros, while Bob Hannah showed off the new RM-250 on his way to the 250 Pro win. Rich Eierstedt swept the 500 Pros in red-hot style on his RC Honda. Broc Glover lit off the day by holeshotting the first 125 Pro moto, folio wed closely by Marty Moates (Hon), Gary Denton (Hon), and Jim Domann (Hon). Broc and Marty proceeded to pull away from the pack, with Marty getting by for the lead after only a few laps. Smith moved rapidly from a mid-pack start and caugh t up to a fading Glover. Moates had a solid lead over Smith until his rear shock mount broke, slowing him down considerably. Smith finally caught up to an ailing Moates and passed him for the lead with only half-a-lap left in the moto. Gary Denton led the second moto out of the gate, but his lead was very short lived as Marty Smith took it over only three comers in to the race. Mike Bell (Hon), Broc Glover, and Dave Williams (Yam) fough t for third. Bell soon got around Denton for second, but Smith was way out in front. With about five laps to go in the race, Smith dropped his chain in the backsection, allowing Bell to take over top spot. Smith promptly repassed CMC's No. One and took home the overall. Bell scored a four-two for second ove rall, while Danny Turner (Yam) cleaned up a pair of thirds for third . Glover had second overall in the bag in the second moto, but a crash d ue to leaking gas forks, dropped him to fourth overall. 18 TNT's Val Tamietti (Mai) provided th e pace in the opening laps of the first 250 Pro moto. Bill Clements (Hus) soon too k care of that, but he too, had a short lived lead as J eff J ennin gs (BuI) jetted on by for the lead. A few laps later, Jennings took a radical fall over the famed Carlsbad Dropoff, allowing Bob Hannah (Suz) to take over the top spot. Clements challenged Hannah for a lap, retaking the lead a few times, but Hannah hung on 'ti l the checkered. Rich Eierstedt rode a fast, steady race for third. Jennings returned for the second moto, holeshotting everyone, but soon dropped out due to first moto crash soreness. Robert Elliot (Hus) then grabbed the lead, only to forfeit when his front spokes c ame loose. That left Han nah and Eierstedt to battle for first, with Eierstedt edging out Hannah for the second moto win. Hannah had the points ov er Eierstedt, who took second, fo llowed by Tamietti, Bill Rubly (CA), and Terry Turner (Yam). Mike G i ll m a n (CZ) and Jon Derhammer (Mai) led the 500 Pros out of the gate in the first m o t o , but Honda's rocket Rich Eierstedt soon found hi mself running away from the rest with "Gassin' Gay lon " Mosier right behind in second spot. Pierre Karsmake rs came in for third. The second moto loo ked like a continuation of the first as Eierstedt and Mosier came out of the start gate one-two with Pierre Karsmakers (Hon) in third. Mosier soon seized his shocks, allowing Pierre to take over for second overall. Eierstedt finished well ahead of the pack, setting consistent 1.35s lap times. Gary Semics rode hard to third on his Kawasaki, Bob Maxwell (BuI) rode very smoothly to fourth, while Mike Gillman ended up fifth. • Results in Results Section.
