Jammin' Jimmy Weinert clinched
his second consecutive National
Open Motocross Championship In
one of the closest series races in
AMA Motocross history. Weinert
said after the race that he won it
two years in a row "on different
bikes, but I ain 't gonna be like
Gary Jones and switch again." As the
National Championship came to the
Motocross West facility on the banks of
the Mississippi River five riders had a
mathematical chance of leaving the
Bayou City with the title: Suzuki's Billy
Grossi, Yamaha mounted J immy
Weinert, Maico's Steve Stackable,
Honda' s Pierre Karsmakers and Kent
Howerton on a Husky .
It all came down to this one ra ce. it
was do or die . Suzuki, with the hope of
Billy Grossi winning, picked up the tab
for a giant press junket to bring the
mot orcyde monthlies to their first
Open National of the year. The pressure
was on Sugar Bear. Weinert was second
in points after Gros si, b ut was coming
off of two bad weeks. Weinert had the
pride of National Champion going for
him and J im my would tell y ou before
