The h u n t is on for the National
Speedway Champion for 1975 and it
began Thursday nigh t at Irwindale
Raceway .
R i c k Woods and Sco tt Siyadge
parlay ed fou r wins each to share th e
qualifying points lead, and to determine
the top ri der of th e n igh t th ey met in a
special 33rd race runoff, heads-up , fo r
fo ur lap s. It was a block-buster.
This pair was equal until the final
tu m. Up to that point the lead had
changed at least eight times and they
rode side-by-side for three solid laps.
Finally, in the last tum, Woods grabbed
the point position for the final time and
won it as the crowd of 5 ,000 went ape.
, Race Two had the crowd booing.
It came on the second lap in turns three
and four with Billy Gray up front and
Jeff Sexton close by in second. Jeff
spied an opening underneath and took
it, pulling alongside Gray. Suddenly he
launched to the ou tside and sen t Gray
sprawling to the turf. It looked like it
was on purpose, but actually Jeff's bike
had hit an inside ru t, which had bumped
him out. The crowd didn't think Jeff
should have tried it in the first place and
they were booing him all nigh t. Alan
Christian of Northern California won
that race.
Before you had a chance to catch
you r breath, Rick Woods won event 19
afte r a h ard fight with Dave Sim s and
Brian Short.
.
Christian, th e No. One northern
rider, saw h is chan ces at a perfect score
go down the drain" when he crashed in
race 20 and finis hed last. Pe nhalJ got his
second wind and p ulled off the fir st
place. Ferrell co n ti nued to roll wi th the
ace in 2 1 foll owed by Steve Nu t te r
taking No. 22, Curoso to p ping 23 and
Larry Shaw pinning back h is foes in 24 .
And so it we nt.
Race 3 1 was the last Woods ' attempt,
and this time the three-time Na ti onal
Champion succeeded, p utting away
Curoso, Steve Nutter an d Sexto n.
Woods and Sivadge had each recorded a
perfect night. Larry Moon won race 32.
That set the stage for the ru n o ff,
with an additional 5200 goi ng to firs t
and $100 to second. 580 more came
from the fans in the stands to line the
winner's pocket and Woods took it all.
