Chip Howell swept the Open class
in the second Western Region
Can-Am qualifier, but the smaller
Expert classes were de cided in the
final 20-minute moto. The Experts raced three motos on Spillway 's deceptively soft, tractive
sand track, while ' 110 support
class riders rode a two mo to program
during the Expert breaks. Desert riders
wou ld have felt at home, as th e
one-and-one-eighth mile riverbed circ uit
devel oped bike-swallowing whoops by
Magoo sticks his tongue out when he wants to go faste r.

while Scott Karl split them up both
times with a two-two score, Danny
"Magoo " Chandler had been wildly
spect acu la r in the two earlier rounds.
Magoo crashed early in the first moto
and worked from last to fou rth in a
demo n -posses sed ride, d odging
wa te rholes left from t horough overnight
track wa tering and other co mpetitors at
will. He was second early in t he secon d
m o t o , b u t pushed off the track to te ll
his disgrun tled dad "It blew up." After
a h asty rebuild, he was third in the final
rnoto until he lunched the gearbox o n
