Mark Brooks (Hon) , a 100 Senior, got by Vandenburg, and th en Burk passed Brooks on the little uphill to regain th e lead. Brooks fin ished second, with Callaway right behind him for third. Vandenburg got the holesh ot at th e start of the third moto , with Burk in second, and Callaway and Brooks side by side in third. Burk quickly p assed Vandenburg and started pulling away from the p ack. Call away and Vandenburg swap pe d po sitions, then Brooks bumped Vandenburg back once again. Second overall money went to Callaway, and Brooks got third. Rick Lee (Yam) took top honors in the 250/500 Senior class , with two seconds an d a first. Craig Lee (Yam) was first off th e lin e in moto one , and le d the entire race , with Rick and Floyd Burk (Yam ) right behi n d him all th e way . Moto tw o was all Burk 's, with Kelly Callaway (Yam ) number two for a lap . then Craig passed him on th e jump in front of th e grandstands. Craig fell ba c k to eighth , giving Callaway back his second place spot. Callaway b roke, and Rick moved in to close the gap . Don Pettingill (C-A) was way back in third. In the final m oto , Craig took off in the lead , Rick was second and Floyd third. Rick to ok over the lead, Burk moved up to second, and in distant th ird was Pettingill. Burk got second overall behind Rick Lee , an d Pettingill .. to ok third. Ray Lovell (42) gas' it around the outside of the pack on the short track. Hi-Boots TT scrambles By Ken Dunn DEHESA VALLEY, CAL., AUG. 24 AI Grover pulled away from the competiti on in .the first 250 Expert ro und, just like the re wasn't any. Th e tal ented Yamaha rider 'u st slid h is way around the course like he was glued to it. Glover repeated his one man ac t in the next two rounds to ta ke the undisputed win. Young Richie Yolk (YZ) battled with Billy Hicks (Yam ) an d Neal Her eth (C·A ) for the runnerup position. Yolk ca me out on to p with th ree solid seco n ds . It was a busy day fo r Richie Yolk wh o obvio usly h ad design s on the 125 Expert tr ophy as well. Vol k 's YZ to o k the flag in the first race with Do n Hartley (Yam) and Scott Hollingsworth (YZ) righ t behin d. Th e second 125 round proved to be one o f th e better races of th e day with Rich ie Yolk and . Don Hartley going at it WFO. After pl aying tag with Hartley for most of th e hea t, Vol k made a fin al p ass just yards from the che ckered flag. Scott Hollingsworth grabbed another third. Hartley never m ade it to the line for the last he a t , giving Yolk an easy overall. Hollingsworth , right behind, topped things off with a second overall. The Open Expert class included some good racing between Tun Melan con (Yam ), ROiler Ring (BSA), and Steve Little (BSA) . Melancon and Ring were tied going into the final heat, each having a first and a second. Not wanting to be left out of the fun Ste ve Little, who had been relegated to th ird in pre vious motes, promptly pulled a holeshot. Melancon p assed Little on the first lap, onl y to be rep assed on a long uphill. But Melan con pressed hard an d sh ortly regained the lead. Little held on to second until the las t lap when Rin g s 1i pped p ast. Melancon secured th e overall, Rin g sec on d, and Little cam e in third. • Tidwell-NeihartTortorelli-big winners By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL., AUG. 2 7 A lot of the big boys were missing due t o the pr o show in Lancaster, but the action on the Corona ovals was still hot and he avy. Mike Tidwell mis sed a week, but made up for it taking home four firsts and on e sec ond for his efforts. The 125cc Expert short track gave Mike a jolt before it was over. In th e semi, Amateur Danny Perkins nipped Mike at the wire an d both riders loo ked rather surprised. Not abou t to let th at happen again Mike got ou t on top of th e main and never looked back. Danny was in for second and David Jenkins rounded out the field with th ird. The 125 Amateur/Expert half-mile had Mike 's long time racing rival Mike Minnig on hand but he was somewhat handicapped being th e only 100cc in the class. He managed to work his way from last to third but he couldn 't quite cateb flying Danny Perkins or Mike TIdwell. Mike 's only defeat, if you can call second a defeat, came at the hands of Jack Langston in the Open Expert
