Word takes two at MRA Championship IT By Jerry Mathel WHITE CITY, ORE., AUG. 24 Rich Word (Suz) had sailing after his arch Peterson (Suz), came both the 125 and 250 o ::; e( o e( x J UJ u. When Samm y Holland gets the bit in his teeth, the top 0-35 'crosser is hard to catch . 28 When Williams hea rd the announcement, he roared into his third moto to see if he co uld better the time and he sure did -: 1 :09. That's fast ! There was a side by side race the who le first moto of the 200 and Old Men's combined class . Two riders passed, repassed, hung over jumps side by side. On the gun lap both shot off the first berm and fell into each other, going down in a heap. We got their numbers, 112 and 179, but they were not even down on the sign-up sheets! We swear they were there, we saw 'em ! Didn't we? Randy Wing came to ride and he did try. He tried on his own 250 and was even flat -trackin ' some of the co m ers until a flat tire stopped him. He fixed it , tried again, and had another flat . He went out on Rick Smith 's 125 but that bike quit ! So did Randy! Bob Connors was out for th e first time on a new 250 Bul, having moved up from the 125s and he was read y to tear hair before the day was over. Everything went wrong and not with the bike, either! Then some nut (name Lynne ) went on back towards Grants Pass with Bob 's pickup keys in their pocket and he and friends had to hot-wire his rig to get ho me! Lance Kelly from Med ford rode well in his 250 class, took first in the first moto, then hauled into third in the Money Race , was working on second when he endoed and too k a sharp rap on the chin that made him forget what happened and caused o ne eye to b lur . He recovered enough to ride th e 250 second moto where he finished with another first. finishing second to Lance ' was his buddy from Medford, Rocky Schatz. The 250 Junior was the largest class and no one expected them to make it through the first tum or water hole, Sprockets Park MX By Cosmic Cat & CO. BAKERSFIELD, CAL., AUG. 22 When District 35's Number On e plate holder, Sammy Holland , gets the lead in a 125cc Senior event, he's very hard to catch. Sammy was displaying one of his usual go od rides tonight when on th e last lap of moto one, h is extremely rapid Honda skidded to a stop with the chain neatly wrapped around the rear axle. Th at cost Sammy the win and eventually the overall victory. Scott Karl (Hon) took the p oint when Holland drop ped out and went on for the first place points in rnoto one . A not he r Ho nd a cont rolled by Intermediate Mike Willis followed for second. Ho lland wanted revenge in m o to two and he got it, for he dusted everyone. flag to flag. He backed off the throttle late in the race, waiting for the rest of the pack to catch up and when he went across for the checkered, he wasn't too start of the 12 5 Main sent the whole pack into th e first turn in one bi g wad of rattling handlebars and tire skuffed sh ins . By some miracle everyone stayed up ; but c om in g int o the infield swi tc hba c k Brian Peterson went down and go t center punched by his brother Rod. Th e two wer e riding identical Su zukis an d in the midst of all the co n fusio n both jumped up and grabbed a bike. o nly to find out they had each other's machines. A quick switch, a bump sta rt an d o ff th e two went, far back an d enj o ying their very own battle, leaving Word unch allen ged for the win . The 250 Main saw Rich grab an early but short lived lead as Ossa-mounted Rich ie Ginther slipp ed p ast on th e back side of the j ump . Then in the sweeper befo re the straight Brian Peterson hung it ou t on th e outside and dropped Word Is this a new two -seater four-wheel hinged motorcycle? Or is it Louie (155 ) Booth leading Pete Simonson over the White City jump? They did, and Dan Yarbrough (MOll ) was in Number O ne , chased by Yamaha-moun ted Frank Nanisi. They had a close race and on the gun lap, tank-slapped t hei r way to the big jump, crossed up over it (together), roared into the first berm, over the hump and into the water hole, out of t hat and into berm two where both went down. Yarbrough yanked his scooter free and took off, Narzisi pulled his up, took off and went right back down, leaving Yarbrough a clear shot.
