Spencer SALINAS, CAL., AUG . 24 The Salinas Elks combine forces with the Salinas Ramblers M.e. each year and' put on what has to be the world's biggest Scrambles. If you take 475 riders, add ove r 4,000 spectators with an overnight camp out, be-in party, spiced with morning illness, lo t s of fog, a few fights, and a 13 and one-half hour race day, t he sum total is one of the classic events in Northern California. A big portion of the day's activities is . in the Expert classes where a win can rocketship an average rider right into the middle of the Black Plate standings. The 250 winner wo uld receive 10 points for the wi n. With Pat Brown coming off the motocross line and winning in a great heat event, it loo ked like the old Sherpa Bultaco would sweep as it did last year. Pat had a loaded heat wi th Jo hn Hlebo, Jeff Eide and Duane Spence b ut handled them all with ease to line up first on the start line . In typical fashion the star t was very ragged and go ing ' into the half-mile corner a crash between Ray Huff, Mike Van Lienden, Duane Spence , Brown and others put Spence's foot through the ou tside boards, popped Brown 's shou lder and twisted VanLienden's knee . It took some tim e to get everybody sorted o ut but despite lo t s of bent things, old man Spe nce and old man Huff, 44 and 45 years respectively, both made it back to the line, one with a bro ken hand. Second start was all Kim J orgenserr's on t he super fast, super quiet, Jorgy's Can-Am and that race for th e win was over. The youngest Jo rgensen couldn't be caught despite t he brave efforts of Jeff Eide who got himself disqualified after a black flag for a falling pipe. Benny King moved up to take second . over· Mitch' Davidson ' while old m an Huff keeps his point count going with a four th over young Steve Brandt and Spence made it in sixth. T he 500 Expert Main was a tremendous sec -saw battle as Matt Caro thers led off the 20-man Main with Jim Foley, Paul Johnson and John Hlebo close behind. Go ing into t he infield, no crashes and everybody up , exiting t he righ t hander before the jump Jeff Eide slid down. The spectre of Laguna Seca returned in a lo t of eyes as Jeff couldn't get ou t vo f the way and whamo, Gary l.eopold smacked the downed bike j ust as Jeff decided to exit the scene. In a flash of exploding gas tanks, bike parts an d dust, it looked bad . Leopold went over the front of his Yamaha and suffered a shoulder inj ury while Eide not only was all right but had time to fix t he Suzuki with some Concord Yam ah a parts and wrenching by Social Securi ty Spence . The restart saw Carothers and Foley take the fast line again but within one lap , the show belonged .to Hlebo and Johnson. The 'sm o o t h Hlebo and his very quick Yamaha moved to the front while Johnson picked his way through and on lap three passed Hlcbo , This ro le reversed itself some five times in some ex ci t in g turns as Hlebo beat out the former National Amateur Champ by ab out 15 feet. Carothe rs still clung to a small lead o ver Foley and Eide. Whi le that thriller would leave everyone wringing, the 6 50 Expert was to come. Buddy Robinson led out the first of two 15 m an heats with Rick Otto playing catc h-up and taki ng second by a few bike lengths but the killer c a m e as he cro ssed the line. An all-too-familiar clunk, and Olio was out for the day with a seized rod . In the second heat John Tavis came from deep in the pack to beat o ut Larry Laine and the crew. The Main was still to be a thriller as Duane Spence was looking better for a second straight shot at the big perpetual trophy . It wasn't to be though as the green flew and Robinson took the front and never yielded. Lee Seidel passed Tavis t o ward the end when little John 's th rottles started buzzing at the wrong • time: • • - . - •• - • - - • • .• • - - - . • • - . . . .. Mitc h Davidson waxed the 125 Experts while Scott Pearson rode his short track Kawasaki to t he win in the 350 Expert followed closely througho ut by Ertol Longboya on his trick 350 Honda. ' Sidehackers were in usual form with some going very fast and some others slow and squirrely. The wi n went to Loreto Masella with monkey Bob Stickle r despite a very co nc erted try from the Harry Fisher/Gary True Harley. Kevin French most likely picked up enough points to make Junior after passing everyone, at least once to win the 250 Novice class. Ryan Seidel looked like t he winner at the onset but the . slippery first turn set him wide while Ken Digges he ld off Mike Gortz for third. Gortz won the wheelie con test to become the first guy entered in the race to win that part of the show in four years. • Results in Results Section . Busby Bombs Benton-Lane Big Bore By Je rry Mathel BENTON-LANE PARK. ORE., AUG. 23 Short tracking a 750 is a pretty hairy form of racing but Al\IA J unior Professional, Allan Busby (Tri) made it look about as easy as falling off a Tohatsu, as he swooped the Open class. TI,e 400 class saw so me of the hottest c o n t e n tion as Bultaco mounted Doug McWi lliams pitted his skill agai nst the Champion /Honda of Kent Goar. TI,e crowd never sat down o nce while these two were on the track . McWilliams' 360 Astro was obviously much quicker down the straights, and Goar 's Honda fou r-stroke without a doubt had the short way through the corners.
