Aft er one practice lap the hacks were lined up for the star t. When they reached the first comer, Crandell /Swart on their 750 Triumph EML too k the lead. Before th ey re ach ed the top of the hill, Ridyard fVermeersch on a 75 0 Kawasaki went in to firs t place with Crandell/Swart in second , in third place was Bell /O 'Conner riding a 75 0 Honda Wasp and Sanner , Jr./ Melillo on a 750 Honda Wasp in fo urth . . As they cr ossed the finish lin e on lap one , the first ligh t weight team of SmithfWhite ridi ng a 360 Yamaha were in third pl ace with Palfreyman /G ardner right behind them in fourth on their 750 No rt on Wasp. By the third lap the Kawasaki had a very long lead and was starting to lap oth er hacks. Crandell /S wart d ropped way back, they had no rear bra ke as they cam e o ff th e d o wnhill an d th e hack lifted. Th e p asse nger was caught up in the bars and the bike flipped. Palfreyman /G ardner soon moved into second pl ace with Bell / O' Con ner in third . Ridyar d/Vermeersch stil l h ad their long lead out front . A few laps later, Lucchese/Morgan on their 500 Yam ah a to o k t he lead for the ligh t weights in seventh place and won in their cla ss. Sanner, Jr./Mellilo pulled off t he track ear ly whe n their cam chain slipped. Thin gs also took a bum o n the 1 1 th l ap for the l e ad ers , RidyardfVermeer sch, as they came do wn the bi g h ill off th e jum p . They had a rear n at tire and the tube got caught in the wh eel loc kin g it up. As th ey tried to get t he tu be out, Palfreyman /Gardner p assed them and came in for the win . The Kawasaki took a second wi th Bell /O'Conner in th ird and Monohan fWheeler on their 750 Yam aha Wasp in fou rth. SmithfWhite on their 360 Yamaha to ok a second and Holland/Harris took t hird. . In the second m o t o , RidyardfVermeersch took the lead with Bell/O'Conner i n se cond and Whitney/Jones in third. By the second lap , Palfreyman /Gard ner on the 750 No rt o n Wasp moved from fifth to third place . Whitney /J ones o n the 750 Norton were in fourth, in fifth was Smith/White rid in g a 360 Yamah a (first lightweight). As th e lap s progressed, Rid yard/Verme e rs ch and Palfreyman/Gardner were switching positions of first and secon d place . In the sixth lap , t he 75 0 Norto n of Palfreyman/Gardner 's st arted having engine problems b ut maintained second place. Bell /O'Conner were still in third with Whitney ll ones in fo urth pl ace. A S th e r a ce progr es sed, Bell /O'Conner started dr opping back and havin g probl ems. Smith fWhite on their 36 0 Yamah a wer e ab le to finish in r ourth pl ace and were the first ligh t weight. As they said late r , " We were out the re goo fin g around j ust to see ho w we 'd do ." They jus t started on a side hack and too k the overall win in th eir clas s.
