Un fortu nately, Kevin 's chain parted co mp an y at the halfway point on the lo op and Conroy ru shed in to the lead . • As they cam e into the pits after 2 2 mil es, Co nroy had a good le ad over fellow ORA rider Go rdon Schmid (400 Yam ) with Sum ners right behind Schmid. Max Eddy ( 175 KTM) was ru nni ng in fo urth on ly to drop o ut o n the second lo op . 0 -37 Open class points leader Terry Davis rounded o ut the top five . His handlebars had slipped down and he was trying to adjust them and didn't notice th e tum arrow. onroy 's little boo-boo allowed i ••••••• ,... ..11 a •• •• • Sumners, who had p assed Schm id , to jump into the lead while Conroy stopped for gas. Sumners had pitted on the first loop and he st arted the third with about a 200-yard lead. But it didn't take Conroy more than three miles to regain the lead and the win. \\tnat was amazing abo ut Co nroy's win ' was th at he rode the whole race with a frame bent from a crash a co up le of weeks ago . The rear wheel was o bvio usly co ck-eyed and Bill was landing from jumps crosse d-u p wh ether he wanted to or not. Sumners finish ed second , while Oavis and Schmid battled ha ndl eb ar -to -hand lebar through the tight sections o f the co urse with Davis co ming out o n top for th ird. 0 .. - i,'s .. .. ff! ORA 's Benny Padilla (25 0 CZ) finished seconds later, despite losing and remounting his ch ain at the bomb and on ce on eac h loop thereafter. ORA 's Gus Pau ll (400 Yam) won the Senior class, four places up on Ramon Lo we (400 Ya m) from 0 -37. ORA 175 Amateur Ve rn Heth allowed as how his m aximum efforts through the "tigh t parts of the co urse were onl y good enough to keep Dawn Grant ( 175 Hus) within sight.
