Product evaluation SOLID-OX WEIDER By Rex William Reese This product is for those of you who aren 't he avy into welding, but don 't want to be up the creek if something should break on y o ur p et scoot. The Solid-Ox welder really works, and does all those things that the ads clai m, like brazing, soldering, welding, and other things that you m igh t need a torch for. With each kit comes t he Solid-Ox welder, mounted on a carrier stand that holds a propane bottle and the oxidizer pellet holder. Included is a pair o f dark protective glasses, a striker, an extra welding tip, a general assortment of pellets, and instructions. Any standard propane bottle will make it work, while the special Solid-Ox p ellets can be bought most anywhere. Advantages: It's light, compact, goes anywhere, and is easy to use with common sense. You don 't have to worry abo ut lugging around big bottles of acetylene and oxygen, gauges, or other things that may have scared you away from doing your own we lding. Disadvantages: It runs only 12 minutes at the most, and is not designed for heavy use . The oxidizer pellets smoke a lo t and should be put into the pellet holder soon after lighting. Used-up pellets are extremely hot, and should be treated with caution after they are rem o ved fro m the holder. Oxidizer filters (which look like five-day deoderant pads) clog up after each use, and must be cleaned. After three or four uses, they have to be replaced. Little dessicant pellets are held in by the oxidizer filter, and spill out easil y when you try to change the filter. The most serious problem with the welder is its carrier stand, which tips over easil y , but this can be corrected with a brick or rock to hold it down. Still, the hassles involved in keeping up a Solid-Ox welder can be lived with , provided care is exercised. The Solid-Ox welder is useful for most minor-to-medium frame repairs, bro ken handlebars, and cracked or broken expansion chambers or exhaust pipes. It can be used on just about any sort of steel, including chro m e moly , and can even braze aluminum. It is compatible with all the avail abl e welding and brazing rods and fluxes that conventional gas welders use . And it is espe cially han dy in that all-too-often situation at trackside where you can 't seem to find anybody with a welding rig. You don 't have to be at the mercy of fa te when your machine starts to go limp. It works great. Available at Sears an d Robot, Monkey Wards, and other fine establishments, from under $30.
