Both were looking for the National win . But it was Earl Bowlby and Lou G e rencer who provided the action. Bowlby set the mark with a5 .91 on his first ride. Gerencer's first ride was five one-hundredths slower at 5.96. On hi s final nm Gerencer blitzed the hill in 5.79 but 'h e "had little time to relax as Bowlby still had two more attempts. Bowlby 's second ride was only a 6.04. On his final attempt Bowlby settled in glanced toward the top and dumped the clutch.
