ELocal hotline ~ E l!') rQ') .-< Some sections of the course gave the riders a chance to test out the padding in th ei r seats. Brooks: four in a row Capistrano Valley European , Scrambles By Jim Stewart . SHADOW MOUNTAIN, CAL ., AUG. 17 Another weekend of dual Eu ro-, pean Scrambles were in store for us District 37 racers, this tim e at over ridden Adelanto (Shadow Mountain) . It was a perfect day for racin g, the heat was not bad and there was a slight br eeze to keep the dust away. 16 As usual the first race was del ayed a half hour due to last m inute en tries, but at 8 :30 sharp the banner dropped for th e 400s. In the Expert/Junior race it was (believ e it or not) Oldt imer Junior Bill Stewart with a sligh t lead on the way to the b omb, followed by Mayes, Bakken , Wright, and Winchell try ing to figur e out h ow to get around th e old man . Mayes was first to ge t by , and that was to be the last time anyone was goin g to throw dust in his face. Ron Wright kept Mayes honest by following him very closely for most of the race, while Doug Winchell followed in Wright's dust for third. Bakken and Rick Shirley rounded out the top five. What happened to the Old timer J un ior who had the jump on these hot shoes? Well, his old body would not last as long as those younger riders, so Bill Stewart had to settle for first Junior Oldtim er. Ramon Lowe also did so me impressive riding to take first Oldtimer Expert. Rick J ones took the win in the Junior class, ahead of Crisco , who after a bad start had a lot of makin g up to do. Ken Pillars returned to the desert to take third, dusting Gary Stammen 'an d Dennis Kline who finished fourth and fifth . Across th e way it was Mark Gran ger and his vintage CZ , again taking the win away from Oint Harris, Chri s Rife, Sm okebo mb, Jr . , and John Schehermann, Bob Webb and his Mono were the fir st of the Oldtimers. After winning bo th duals last week, Cordis Brooks had so much fun that he thought he wo uld do it again this weekend. Cordis has reall y come back strong, just recovering from a broken leg. He has won every race he has en tered since returning, but has yet to battle with Mayes , Larry Roseler, who beat Mayes at a European Scrambles a few weeks ago, took the second spot in the 250 Expert /J uni or race behind Brooks. Andy Kirk er , ridi ng his Yamaha for the last time be for e turn ing to a Husky , was th ird, wh ile Rosel er 's teammate, Bruce Ogilvie, was fo urth and Rusty Sanderson fifth . It was quite a race as y ou can seen by th e names in the top five. Meanwhile , back in the du st, the future Experts were going at it, with Paul Cloward being th e eventual victor, ahead of Ken Miller, Ray Sadd, Bob Hand and Mike Toll e. George Walker was the first gray haired finisher. If Mike Pat chen , Tom McGu rk, De Roy Endlick, Louis Boyd, and Jody Belknap, keep riding like they did this weekend, will soon have to be battling it out with the likes of first Junior Cloward. Th ey were the first five 250 Novices. Dyno Deane, once again blew the other 175 ยท Experts in to the pucker plan ts. This wee k's list of the top four behin d Dean o included many former class winners, Max Eddy , Jeff Kaplan , Gary Con ner, and D.C. Williams. To m Kelly was first CJunior, o ut riding Gene R oc k, ne w rider Russell J en kins, Richard You ng , an d Ran dy William s. With the 175 class being won by so many different riders so far thi s year, it lo oks like a real race for the nu mero uno plate. Now th e re is photographic p roof that desert racers know how to tum a b ike . Patrick Norton picked up his first win in the 175 Novice class on th e Capi strano course, by keeping his th ro t tle tu rned on lo nger than Nico las Peffer, Tr oy Moore , J r., John Tobin, an d Gerald Delzell. J ohnny Fry and fellow club mem ber Jack Hen rey battled it ' ou t for top honors in the 175 Oldtimers division. "Potsy" Weber looked to have the Trail class win wired, until he missed the home chec k, giving the lead to eventual winner Marc Cartwrigh t. Cartwri gh t was kept honest by newly turned Expert Tom Ru tten . Roeseler, Sr. was third, holding up the family n am e in the Trail class . Gary Willens seems to be enj oying his new ride on a Penton, winning the A.Meek came from the back of the pack to score a first in the 125 class . z o ;: a:
