Kent Howerton. almost took the win with his 360cc Husky , but fatigue towards the end of the second 45 -minute mota dropped Kent back to third overall in the final tally. In the 250cc Support class, John Gurga from Johnstown, New York, put in an outstanding ride with his Yankee Motors sponsored Ossa and that, comb ined with a little bad luck to some other front runners , gave John the win . Riding his first event this year on the National circuit, Florida's John Joyner, Husky, took second overall ahead of Jeff Bonasera on a Yamaha MX . First inspection of the Mote-Masters track on Saturday had all the riders thinking Sunday's race would be a d ust run , but continous watering turned the powdery surface into ideal motocross te rrain. By p ract ice it was obvious that the nearly mile-lon g natural terrain an d very hilly course would b e an ideal battle ground fo r the National. It also got rougher and the te mperature hotter as the day went along. Not too m an y riders in the 500cc National class found that they could keep up a strong pace for more than twen ty min utes under such conditions. . B ac k on the National tour after layoffs during the Inter-AMA Series were Gary Semics and Kent Howerton. Kawasaki's super tuner Steve Johnson is now looking after Gary's 400cc protoKaw, and Steve cleared up rumors by saying that Gary will remain with Kawasaki as its only fully sponsored rider this season. Ken t Howerton sat out the In ter-AMA Series, explaining that it was no longer a necessary series, a feeling shared by many others. Instead, Kent took in some local racing back home in Texas where he was leading a race in Austin and hit a spectator who crossed the track in front of his Husky . The resulting crash saw the spectator being, " . ..knocked 30 feet thru the air and landing unhurt, while I tore up my jaw pretty bad," Kent explained as he showed th e scar. The accident prevented Kent from gerting' in shape for this week's National because he couldn't practice, and it left h im out of shape ' just en ough to perhaps preven t him from winning. Q ualifying motos were run for so me of the riders in the 500 cc class , among them Pierre Karsmakers wh o easily won his 10 minute moto ahead of te ammate Marty Smith and CZ's Bob , Harris. Marty made it known that he didn't like big bore bikes in particular, but he seemed to be doing an excellent job
