"Look Bruce, I'm not gettin' off un til you S/ll{ I ca'I be your pit monkey." Penhal l finally ditched his hairy friend, went on to halt Ferre ll's drive at Bakersfield. Dangerous Dubbdominant; monkeyshines at Bakersfield By Dennis Greene, John Bethea and Bill Kolberg Ventura, California August 12, 1975 It was Pepsi-Cola . night at the races, featuring three two-man, two-lap trophy dashes. The final runoff between Scott Sivadge and Bill Cody was close, with the win going to Sivadge. Sco tt topped off the night running second to Mike . . Bas~ m the s~ratch mam. event and gettmg fifth m the handicap, Dubb Ferrell picked his third handicap main event win in as many nigh Is. Dubb made his move on front-runner Randy Marsh on the last lap, got him in tum one, and was still pulling away at the checkered flag. Getting the record book straight, last week I reported that several riders have won back-to-back scratch main events at Ventura, among the riders I listed was Mike Bast, but I am in error. Mike has been in most of th e main events at Ventura but until this past Tuesday night he had not won any scratch mains, let alone two in a row. San Bernardino, Californ ia August 13, 1975 12 Flashy Bruce Penhall finally put the brakes on torrid Dubb Ferrell with a close but decisive victory in the handicap main event Wednesday night at Inland Motorcycle Speedway. "Darlgerous" ~bb, in. quest. of his fouri!' con.secuuve handicap main, was working himself up from the 40-yard line with a blend of blazing speed and careful sliding. But starting with a 10·yard advantage, Penh all managed to drop inside the early leader Randy Marsh and hold Ferrell through the final two laps f~lr victory. F?llowmg ~wo re~tarts, Sonny Nutter dominated J= FIshback .and. Guy Waterson for the scra~ch main victory. The fourt.h entrant, Mike !3:ast, w.as sent to the pits by referee Mike Hinshaw before the final start for an infraction of the rules. Division two honors went to ~ewcomer . Finlay . Wallace, w~o co mple tely dlst~ced his opponents .m the handicap final, and Steve Hem, recording his second main score in three weeks with a convincing win in the seratch main even t. Results in Resul ts Section. Irwindale, California August 14, 1975 It d idn't take lo ng for folks to realize that Dubb Ferrell was getting primed for a nigh t of torrid action. He was already destroying the other tracks in Southern California. And when the gate went up in his handicap heat, Dubb shot out like a bullet and by lap two had gobbled up all the yardage to take over the lead. He went on to win by an amount of yards that sent the crowd buzzing. Later, in his handicap semi, Ferrell came from the 50, and this time finished second, placing him in the main . Ferrell made up for this one lapse and won the scratch consolation over Jim Fishback, Scott Sivadge and Jeff Sexton. And in the main, Rick Woods continued his drive from last week and bested Steve Nutter, Sonny Nutter and Bill Gray. Costa Mesa, California _ August 15, 1975 As the big U. S. S pee dway Championship night at the L.A. Coliseum draws near, the weekly racing gets stronger and better. Dubb Ferrell is a good example of what I mean. For the first weeks of the season he was just another good rider working his way into several main events and only winning twice. In the past two weeks he has been winning everything in town. Last Friday night for the second straight week in a row he won the handicap main at Costa Mesa. Thursday at Irwindale he got third in the same event, Wednesday at San Bernardino a second, ~~ .h.e~ s~ted ~ ~~i ~ handicap main event at Ve ntura on Tuesday n igh t. Besides the money he wo n, those all-important points the re make Dubb eligible for the qualifying rounds that will produce 16 riders for the Nationals on November I. Mike Bast was the other big money-maker at Costa Mesa this week, walking off with the scratch main money, just ahead of Rick Woods, Scott Sivadge and Bill Cody. Bakersfield, Califo rn ia August 16, 1975 If you thought last week's unicycle half-time show was the Speedway version of tag-team wrestling, this week you might have thought it was a zoo when three actors showed in full makeup from the Planet of the Apes movies. For two hours they played with the fans as well as with the riders. One even worked as a pit monkey. Sonny Nutter for the fifth time in a row won the Purple Helmet Match Race. This best-two-out-of-three race is a crowd pleaser, Nutter lost the first round to Dubb Ferrell but came back strong to lake the next two. A new winner in both main events this week, Scott Sivadge got his first scratch win at Bakersfield this year taking the main event wire to wire. Dan Toomey of Bakersfield brought the fans to their feet when he got the jump on the start of the handicap main and went the distance for the win. A new name to . the sport and the victory circle, Finley Wallace, just started riding in the Southland t his week and ran away with the division ~ t'Y ~a.i ~ ep: . 1 r e• .
