Blowing the cover on Suzuki's "secret reed"
I
One of the best-kept secrets in motocross, the internal configuration
of Suzuki's works motors for the European wars, is ou t in the open.
Why? Becaus e they have m ade the just-announced RM 25 0 and RM
370 production motocrossers a bou t as close to th is ye ar 's GP bikes
as the factory en gineers can ad mit with out r evealin g a trade sec re t
or tw o .
Lurking under that mysteriou s extra pair o f cy lin derbase studs is
a par t-tim e "power reed" (idea sou nd fa miliar to all you ex-kart
race rs P] that opens up when the engi ne's air demands exceed the
capabilities of the fairly mild pis to n-controlled intake. The aim is to
raise the absolu te power peak and widen the usable power band
simultaneously.
The other trick stuff is more o ut in the open . Laid-d own gas
shocks. lea ding-axle forks (humongous stroke at both ends), alloy
tank, and lo ts of p ieces with the word "magnesium" cast in to the m.
Asked about what could in terchange be tween these R..\ls and th e T M
series bikes, th e Su zuki reps replied "oh, nuts, bolts, a few fittings
may be. " Th e new bikes truly de serve the much -abused term,
Hall-new. "
Comple te tech analy sis and t rack test of Su zu ki 's lat est is du e in a
cou p le weeks. Stay glued.
