The eveni ng ended wi th the special races th at were always a feature in th e days of y ore . It was J im Doron in th e wien ie ra ce ... riders had to approach a string of h ot dogs dangling ab ove th e st art line all ple ntifully coated with mustard and while balancin g th e bike, cho mp away . . . and Jim again in th e spoon ra ce , a r aw egg on a toothclenched spoon held firmly down and around and ba ck from tum on e with Mike Posey right on his heels and dropping his egg j ust a sp lit second from the fini sh, while a lo t of the guys didn't last two feet! Jim Hays did a terrific job on th e ridin g backw ard r ace , nonchalantly going all around th e sweeper an d ju st waiting for th e o nly o th er man to give him a real cha llenge , Ben Fakkel dy, to fall off. Ben won th e slo w race .. . Resul ts in Results Section. • Parriott scores grand-slam at CMC Carlsbad By Jim Lester CARLSBAD, CAL., AUG. 10 Mike Parri ott helped celebrate road racing's return to Carlsbad Raceway afte r a one-ye ar absence by scoring a qu artet o f vict ories at ·20 Sunday ' s CMC race. His trusty Dale -Starr Kaw asaki Z-I was the same machine th at had ca rri ed Yvon Duh am el to vi cto r y in the Heavyweight Product ion race at Lagun a Seca t he week be fo re . Vict ory number o ne came in "Sup er Cafe " as Mike ran away from the field, even tu ally lap ping everyone bu t " Dirty Dick " Kilgroe . The haybale s in th e chicane at the end of the straightaway r eally took a beati ng as several over-e nth usias tic racers tried to m ake up for hor sep o wer deficiencies by braking lat e (or not at all!) for the tum. J o hn Mc Do n ald go t a h ole -shot in the Open Product ion race , but Parrio tt shot pas t within a lap , leavi ng J o hn in a wheel-to -wheel battle with Lee Fleming and Kilgro e. Lee rode a nearl y flawless race to finally snatch second p lace. Parrio t t ra n o ff with the Open GP as well, with Kilgroe in seco nd despite falling off once in the parking lo t tum, and ge tt ing into a gigantic tank-slap pe r at the ch icane. Mike co mple ted hi s " grand slam " with ano t he r victory over Kilgroe in th e Four-Stroke Grand Prix . In the 35 0 Grand Prix , run at th e same tim e, J am es Vialovos nipped David Emde at t he finish a fter a race-long dice . 3 50 Production was the closest race of the day. Th e entire race wa s a s l i p -s t r e a m i n g duel between the RD-350 's of John Glover, Tom Hayner, defendin g 350 champion Alan Gin gerelli, and Jan Mit chell. With only a co up le laps to go, Tom out-br aked J ohn as they jammed into the chicane . With Gingerelli an d Mitchell snapping at his heels Glover waited until the final mad das h for the flag, then re-p assed Tom fo r the win with "just a hair more horsepo we r". Back o n form F1em Juliussen and his Kawas aki Green Streak ran off with 100 kept the gas on lon g enough to stay ahead of hard-rushing Gre g Draskouich, on another Honda, of course . • Results in Results Section. GP honors. J ohn Nash was a d istant sec on d , with Paul Wilde on a 50cc Yamah a (co mp lete with disc brake ) nipping Steve Ughoc for th ird o vera ll. Wi de also won the 125 Production l clas s. • Result s in Resul ts Secti on Crashin' 'n' cashin at Rawhide By Danny Raymond ELSINO RE, CAL., AU G. 10 Tag Turner too k home the big m one y in th e Rawhide CRC 125 Expert m otocross afte r one heck o f a battle with Harry's Cycl e's Marty Miller. In th e first moto Tag got th e start over Marty, but ju st co uldn 't make his lead las t. Miller put th e pass on Turner and stretch ed it to a co m forta ble lead by the end. The second moto was j ust th e opp osite. Turner p lay ed " fastes t ca tc h up in the west" and p assed Miller with grea t ease. In th e third moto Turn er lo cked up the overall win afte r Miller had tr ou ble o n th e t um coming o ff th e gian t downhill. Miller go t bac k in it, but rode along thinkin g abo u t wh at had j us t happen ed. Onl y Marty kn ows wh at reall y did happen out there. While tyi ng up his ove rall in the th ird m oto, 25 0 Intermediate rider Jeff McK eisey hi t th e lip of a 20-foo t cliff, flew over his bars and landed in a big pil e of ro cks. Jeff walk ed away with little injury, but his Bulta co was another . story. Greg Done took his MX Mon osh ock, a very popular bike ou t a t Rawhid e, to another win under th e Open Exp er t d ivisio n. Wheelsmith Maico-mounted Jon Miller locked up second pl ace with runner-up finish in all three motos, Danny J ean, another Harry 's Cycle ride r, r an away with the 125 Intennediate class, even passing over half of the Experts.
