In the Handicap Main . Gran t Salyers of T aft lo oked like an experienced Los An geles driver as he went high. low an d thro ugh the mi d dl e to nail down the win fro m a 30-yard handicap . The Scratch Main looked li ke t he who's who of the to p 10 with Salye rs faci ng "Mad Man " Max Ko em an s , Ru ss Du ronsole t an d Jack Marti n. This was Mart in 's first ex perience with th ese Scratch Main reg ulars. Wh en the gat e we nt u p . it was o ne of those first turns where it looked like n o one was going to give an inch - an d no one d id. The tr ack was cap ab le of bei ng ridden h igh and lo w an d everyone hun g in . Fin ally Mar t in , who started on the pole. wo rked a slight advan t age and even tho ugh K oe m an s was p u tt ing tr e m en d ous pressure on fro m the high groove, he co uld n ot ge t by. It was n 't quite enough as Martin too k a we ll-deserved win. • Jose is st ill Rich MacMurray and he was o ut for blood af te r las t week's Match loss . He o utdistanced Ron McGill in his Han dicap heat and did th e same to Cliff Ball in th e Se mi wh ile Den ny had his sideways p roblems in the heat, losing to Paul Orl an d i in a three m an eve n t, th en ta kin g second to J erry "Kamikaze" Bowe rs in the Semi. Bal l led o ut the Main with Bowers over Marty Benc k. Denny outguessed MacMurra y fo r th e lin e off th e firs t corner. Rich ard st uffed his Leonardo Lin c ol n- M ercu ry special into the num b e r two c orn e r , did a superb job of ou tside slidi ng and did p ic k up a p lace ; b ut so did Denny, by staying close to th e pole . The two wo u nd up behind Kamika ze Bowers, no pl ace fo r the unwary . Both knew that th e poi n t lead was at stake and so th ro wing caution to the wind, bo th gassed it down the back strai g h t an d got by with ease. Mean while , Cliff Ball had bu ilt up a n ice tidy le ad having started fro m the 10 wi th th e big boys co m in g o ff the 40. Both S tormi n ' Norman an d Rollin' Richard closed th e gap with the very lar ge house st anding on as MacMurray kept try in g the o u tside in be a u tiful broadslides . Denny was flawless in this perfo rmance and as the two go t by Ball o n either side , it was Den ny set fo r the chec kere d. In the Scra tches Egge rs, Baugh, MacMu rray and Denny all ea sily won their h eats with Frank over MacM urray in o ne Semi and Den ny Robin son su rp risin g Den n y in th eir Sem i. The Main was no surprise fo r Denny who d rew the pole and we n t right t d the fro nt. MacM urray stayed on him for th e first two lap s and t hen fell to fo urth with a sp u ttering motor allo wi n g Denny to ta ke seco nd with Frank Co ok in fo r th~. • Res ults in Result s Section.
