Richee Collins (Mai) and Jeff Borden (Mai) h ad a di ce go ing for the third spot, but th e battle en de d wh en b o th Collins and Borden dropped out du e to me chanical trouble . Smi th began to apply th e pressure on Haa g, bloc king o ff the fast lin e to the drop-off to ta ke the le ad on lap 10. Haag soo n rep assed Tamali and walked away for the victory. Chu ck Rouse (Has) came in with a strong thi rd. Smith made up fo r his sec o n d pl ace fini sh in th e first mo to by gra bbin g th e st ar t of th e sec o n d race , with Haag, S teve Montagu e (Mai), and Mark Ab raham s (Mon) right beh in d him . But by the en d of th e secon d lap, Bob Haag swep t around the qu ick Kaw rider to ta ke th e lead for th e rest o f th e race. Smi th and St eve Mon tague battled between th emselves fo r secon d. with Smith ta king it. Th e 500 and 125 Pro s ran the second gate together, wi th the 125 Pros bein g a li ttle on the short side today. Dale Anderson (CZ) set th e p ace in the ope ning laps of the first moto, but he was s oon passed by the ne arl y unbeatable. Pet e Maly (CZ) of Coast Moto Cycl e ; Pete turned up the wick and took off for the hill s. Terry Turner (Yam ), falling twi ce during the moto, still finish ed second in the overall score , passing Dale Anderson o n the 11th go-round. Kevin Crawford (Hon) of D&G fin ished a strong fourth , second 125 , followed by Jeff Withe rell (Mai) in third 500 spot. Moto two saw Pete Maly blow the fast pa ck of Pro s into the weeds. While Maly was hookin ' it out in front, Terry Turner was on the gas, but a costly crash o n the second lap dropped h im to the back o f the pack. Crawfo rd to ok HERCULES DEALERSHIPS over second, with David Boydstun (Yam) holding down a strong third. Turner was dialing it on once again and soon passed Boy dstun, with the mono rid er giving Turner little hassle. With four laps to go , Crawford was way ahead, but Tu rn er was closing the gap quickly_ At th e fin ish Turner was inches behind Crawford, but the D&G rider held it o n jus t a little longer to ta ke the 125 win. I When th e du st p articles settled in the pits of th e first class "C" Short Track event at Indian Dunes in Valencia, Jamey Michaels was co ngratulate d by racers and crew alike for an eve n tfu l evening. In the early eve ning races a number o f minis ba t tled through a heat and a se mi for the privilege of competing in th e main even t , AI though the lead ch an ged seve ral times during the races, battling Jim Hateley rode away with th e honors by le ading th e pa ck throughou t all 10 laps in th e main. Hateley 's average lap time was a flash y 16.8 seconds. The 125 Novice class race was st olen awa y by Randy Howard -on a Yamaha and the 250 Nov ice class , not to be o utdo ne by its smal ler brethren, showed astonishingly co mp e ti tive spirit. Keith Aronson was the winner of a moonlight duel with Lenny Peterson. The last race of the night was the Pro even t with the winner riding off with a cash purse.
