Annual Old Timers TT at Perris By Maureen Lee P ERRIS, CAL., AU G . 9 What started as a Benefit to help rebuild th e Perris club house three years ago is now an annual event. Most of th em were th ere, the District's Old Timers and it was an in te re sting even ing, especially watching the California Gophers co n tingen t. They were th ere in full force and with so many in club colors you'd have thought they were still bei ng lined two bits if the y didn 't wear 'em. Th e fun b egan just before practice. Picture a bu lky ride r laced into his boots, helmet and goggles re ady and he has his kidney belt in his hand. Flips it aro un d his waist and it.doesn 't fit. Well , they're su p posed to be sn ug so he tugs. Tugs again and again. Just no way baby, is th at bel t going to meet and he wail s to a hy ste rical wife. " Honey ! I do n't understand! I wore it last year!" Wish y o u 'd been th ere. On the ready line for practice th e ribbin g go t worse. Most be autifu lly turned out rider for the eve ning was Herb ert Matthews wi th a gorgeo us T riu mp h an d a jumper bearing a large Union J ack . .. di d m y hear t go o d, he did. The oldes t r ider was Paul Lambert a t 56 who won a trophy for th at and did right well fo r h im sel f in th e 125 clas s, th e onl y race he rides each year ... and Neil Winston came the furthest, all the wa y from Minnesota . . . and John G Rue 's Triumph literally spitting fire in the 5 0 0 Expert. Wish the re was sp ace to mention you all . . . Ben Fa kkel dy would have had cause to we ep if we hadn 't straightened out th e results for his class and got him hi s second as both h is bike and Neil \Vinslon '5 car rie d a number on e pla te . Th at particul ar class was a who's who the re was Darwin Ballard, Tony De nius unh appily having bike problems and Mik e Posey with a sup er fast Norton. Ken Maele y made hi s melon in th e 500 Novice race co ming off an unfam iliar bi ke an d it was quite so me t ime befo re he co uld re m em ber what h appene d , and I don't kn ow another pe rson in the industry who just enj oys the sp ort as much as Ken does.
