Lucerne Valley, Californ ia August 10 Livin g up to thei r nam e the Double Crosser ?o.IC in co nj unction with the Desert Donkeys , put on th eir hal f of this week ends dual European Scrambles in dusty Lucerne Valley. After a half-h our delay in th e m orning, whil e the ambulan ce carted som eone off to th e hospital, a full day of racin g started with th e 400s. Af ter the start, Junior Steve Sh ook jumped into a sligh t lead, which so on en de d with Mayes and Ba kken both passing him on their Huskies. Mayes went on to win with a very comfortable lead, wh ile Bakken kept th e second spot after battling Tim Bowman. Shook got a rear flat on the first loo p , but still managed to ride fast en ough to ge t first Junior at about seventh overall. Ridi ng his first District 37 race in m onths, number one plate holder Cordis Brooks showed the other 250 Experts how he earned his number by blowing them all away . Cordis pulled a giant lead o n the first loop, then seemed to just cru ise the rest of the race. With first place way out in front, Andy Kirker and Bru ce Ogilvie battled it out for the second spot with Fairway sponsored Kirker coming o ut the victor. "Dyno Dean 0 " and his super fast 175 Pen to n kicked up the dust for the other 275 Experts to follow and that is the way the race went, with another fellow Penton rider, Max Eddy taking the second spot ahead of Jeff Kaplan who won on the other side. The Expert/Junior co urse on the Crossers ' side was defin itely a p ower course, with "Dyno Deana" proving that his 17 5 will out pull an y other 175 in the desert. Marc Cartwrigh t p ic ked up another firs t in th e Trail class aboard hi s o lde r model Penton,' to help in his run for the n um ber one p la te. Chuck Cartledge is also back in contention in th e Trail class pic kin g up a second this week ahead o f newl y turned Ex per t Gary Willens. Leave it to the Weenie Bros. to take a picture of one of their own club members out in front of some other riders. invitation from the owner, Jim, to stop by any time for a brew or some free lime for sponsoring clubs, to mark their co urses. J im also has a camping area o pen to an yone who wan 15 to use it, as lo ng as they are District riders. Results in Resul ts Section. This guy won his class. Somebody called for .8 tear down and they still haven't found the donkey. Meanwhile , r ight a cross the sandwash, the Novices were h aving some battl es of their own. In the first race it was Clint Harris showing the other Open Novices around the very rough course. Following Harris was Randy Wilson and Smokebomb's son Jack Gaetz, who was riding his dad 's old 360 Yam and going berserk. 12 ~ In the 250 Novice class , it was Mike Patchen, Dave Sanchez, and J ody Belknap, while Reed Johnson, Mike Bierman, and John Tobin w ere doing the same in th e 175 class. Dennis Green was the one to catch in the Trail Nov ice class, and that is exactly what Chris Matlock and Jeff Bennington were trying to do, fmishing secon d and third. While coming home Sunday night, I stopped by th e Y·C afe in Lucerne fo r a beer, and District 3 7 got a personal Both of the courses 'MIre very f.t and let everybody get a chance to see how fast they really could go. Lucerne Valley, Califomia August 10 Quite often Dual Scrambles like this week's, are good for big points. Well, th at's what Mitch Mayes (Hu s) d id th is week, but it's easier said than done. For in stance, to th e bomb in the Open Exper t race, Mitch h ad a short battle w ith Am ateu r Steve Shook. It di dn't last too long as Steve to o k care of hi mself by crashing and Mayes was never really challenged again except by Am ateur Ro bbie Parma. Parma lost sec o nd place to J im Sum ners when he be nt his shift lever on one of the many rocks. Meanwhile, back in the dust a fast m ovin g A. C. Bakken was picking off people and moving u p in places. On e of the people to get the Husky finge r of fate was J im Sumners, and when the checkered flag fell it was Mitch, A.C . an d Jim! The next gro up o f hot shoe s to come to the lin e wer e th e Division On e Am at eu r /Experts, this race was so close to an upset it was unreal. First to the bomb, an d re ally moving, was Amate ur Mark Zoller (Ya m) . Mark is a Sled Rid er an d the pre ssu re he go t was fro m an other o ne of hi s club mem bers, Brent Wallingsfo rd. These tw o went at it t oo th and nail for at least h alf the race , but the cli nche r came when these two sp lit o ut onto two trails for the lea d an d Cordis Bro oks sn uck up through the middle and zap ped them both. Well , it looked like that was the way they were go ing to finish, b ut o n th e last lap Bre nt got second spot away from Mark and that's the way they finis hed. Well, ladies and gentlemen th e nex t race is one that a lo t of Divisi on Two Amateur/Experts will not like to read abou t because to the bo mb T ru dy Beck smoked them all. Bu t by the ti me the first lo op was over I was going nuts because a guy that usually ge ts seconds an d th irds was blasting in firs t. J eff Kap lan (Hus) w as go in g fo r it, and he wasn't go ing to let go, fo llowing hi m in h ot pursuit it was Max Eddie (KTM) . His ch arge for firs t was never to end, because if he were to back off, yep you guessed it, Trudy would hav e been into second. Running on down the line was another mind blower, Bob Rutten was hooking in fo r a cool fourth and hot on his heels was another tweeter Dawn Gran t (Hus). Well, as the race progressed Bob passed Trudy and at th e finish they were in th is order : Jeff, Max, Bob . First girl went to Trudy Beck and second girl was Dawn Grant Amateur, nice work girls. Just think about it, out of about 80 or so Amateur/Experts, if you weren't among the best, Trudy and Dawn would have zapped you. The next group of riders to see the banner drop were th e Trail Experts and this was an interesting race too. You see Larry Roesler (H.D) had the lead at the bomb, but after th e fir st lap he pulled o ff the tr ack. I asked Larry what was wro ng an d he said that his back h urt. Well, n o mo re than 30 sec onds later second place cam e around, and it was Amateur To m Ru tten (Hod). That 's all Larry neede d to see and he was o ff again, regaining the lead fro m Tom and holding it to the fini sh, Tom was second an d co m ing in fo r a de serving third was an o ther Expert Chuck Cartledge (H od). No w sin ce th is was a dual, th e Desert Donkeys had another co urse for th e N ov ices, whic h was com ple tely differen t. To begi n with it was su per fast, co nsisting of two old bomb runs and a fire ro ad. So for th e first race of th e day it was th e Division On e racer s and we got to sec: so me new talent as most of th e old class winners are now Am ateurs. First to th e bomb it was so me one who has not raced in quite a whil e, Ro ger Brenner (Hus), followed by th e so on to be new leade r, Vance Sch mi d t (Ya m). May be it was too lo ng of a Saturda y night or m ay be hi s long layoff , but never th e less Rodger go t d us ted! Vance an d his Mono were really go ing for it and never were ch allenged fo r th e lead. Th e nex t rider to co me in w as Yamaha mounted Larry Williams and in third was Steve Hu rd sponsored Jody Belknap ri d ing a Husky. Coming in fo r firs t girl No vice was "J o nes" sponsored, Juanita Morris (Isla ). The Open class was led wire to wire by Mark Granger on hi s flying CZ and co m ing in fo r second and third respectively were Roger Kiefer (Yam) and Clint Harris (Yam). The last group to see the banner drop were the crazy kids on their 100s. The eventual winner was Hodaka mounted Craig Boesn, followed by his good buddy Karl Miller also riding a Hodie , and rounding it out in their class for third was Larry George (Kaw). Today's races also included a sidehack class. The team of Robert Sanner, Jr./OlarHe Sanner riding a Norton pulled off the win. Yes folks, there was areal donkey out there but I didn't find him as interesting to look at as his pilot. The rider wore a helmet that had a antenna with an ear of com clanging from it. The com could be rai sed or lowered depending on traffic co n d itio ns . The donkey was donated by a member of the Lucerne Valley Chamber of Commerce. Results in Results Section.
