" Inter-AMA-& 125 Nationaf MX Tony D. & MarlyS. clinch MX titles By Charles Morey BRUCETON MILLS. W. VA ., AUG. 3 The inevitable officially became reality Sunday at the Appalachia' Lake round of 1975's Inter-AMA • and 125cc National MX senes as Tony DiStefano (Suz) and Marty Smith (Hon) converted their strings of victories in to overall series wins. In the final round of the 250cc Inter-AMA series, Tony D. scored h is third overall win of the four-race program to clinch the series title. Honda works ace Smith continued to dominate the 125cc National circuit, scoring another one-one victory and ~se curing his righ t to carry Number One in 1975. Smith 's 700 point total , exceeds Tim Hart's 320 second place by enough that it's impossible for Hart to catch up in the 'two remaining 125cc National rounds. An estimated 8,000 spectators gathered on the hillsides of Appalachia Lake Park to cheer on local favorites and U.S. stars in a pair of races that, . with the exception of Smith's 125cc ru naway , were decided in the final laps of last motos. Although Smith easily tagged the win , the next pl ace s developed in to a tight three-way skirm ish among Mickey Boone, Nils Nilsson and Tommy Croft. 250cc Inter-AMA Only one position remained constant from start to finish in th e opening 250cc mota, Tony D's lead, and th at was anything but sec ure. Suzuki 's new 250 cc National Champ le d Gary Ch aplin, Rex Staten and Stev e Stackable in to turn one, but Stackable blitzed both Staten and Chaplin exiting the tum and put the instant rush on I DiStefano. Before lap one h ad been comp le ted , Rocket Rex jammed in under Steve, clipping the Maicos front wheel in a super-tigh t blo ck p ass. Lap one saw DiStefano holding off Staten followed by St ackable, John Savitski, Jimmy Weinert and Gary Chaplin . Pierre Kars makers followed John Ayers in eighth, but before two more laps had been run Pierre had fought up into fifth on his way to an eventual third in the mota. Weinert fell victim to gearbox failure in the opening lap s. A lug on the inside of the Yamaha's engine cases broke off and tangled with the shifting mechanism, leaving Weinert down and out for the m ota . Gary Chaplin was next to go when the CZ seized while Gary was racing with Pierre over fifth place. About 25 minutes into the moto, Rocket Rex ran a u t of wind. Still plagued by injuries suffered in a Superbowl get-off, Staten weakened and dropped back out of a top placing after an otherwise outstanding ride. Two top contenders were ousted from any chance a t a top overall placing before the first lap of the last moto. Stackable twisted his ankle, stopped at the end of lap one to check the damages, then rode a slower pace to finish a p ainful 27th. Rex St aten su ffered a wrist injury, and called it quits for the day . Jammin ' Jimmy Weinert, with anew motor installed between motos , took over the lead. Tony DiStefano worked by earl y leader John Savitski (Bul) on the sec ond lap and charged off after Weinert. A classic Jimmy{[ony bu mper battle ensued for several laps. At one point Tony cut off the Jammer to pass in a tight 5-tum on ly to be "re-cut off" in the same S. Weinert made the final move in the power play, and Tony D eased back, no do ub t considering the possibility of crashing with the Jammer (who'd DNFed the first m oto) and losing a sur e win . Consistent finishes in both motos determined the final outcome. DiStefano 's one-two was obviously th e ride of the day, with , Karsmakers ' three-three taking the runner-up spot. Mike Hartwig scored a pai r of fifths, putting the Husky rider in third overall ahead of teammate Terry Clrk's seven-six showing. Billy Grossi's bummer second mota ending left the other Team Suzuki rider in fifth place by virtue of a fourth and a 10th. Don Kudalski's Honda finished 10-7 for sixth . • It was just like old times, bump ing bars with Tony Dand Jammin' Jim.Weinert t rails the new Inte r-AMA champion he re, Gary Chaplin (32 1 battled bravely with Pierre unti l his motor melted.
