Scott and Red Wing soar to total victory at Ascot TI! The Superbowl was so neat that I can't let it go without some mention even if it is old-hat (or would that be old helmet?). There are some folk who get a bit highbrow about it every year, and maybe it is a plastic scene, but for Late race resu lts : ano ther Red Wing w in thanks to a competit ion fo rk th at 's the finest available, bar no ne. It's got prem ium triple-lip seals to keep fluid in, d irt ou t ; high·performance damp ing , with hydraul ic stops to prevent bottom ing; lightweight alloy sliders ; tempered stan ch io n tubes; 3-pos it ion preload springs, externall y adjustable; and lots more. All fitted · w it h shoc k s , opt iona l spri ngs and steering dam pers - int o a total , tuneable suspension system that bui lds winners. Ju st ask the Red Wing team: AMA Grand National experts Don Cast ro, John Gennai, Rick Hoc king, Charles Sea l; Enduro sta r ' Alfie Henr ich; and Motocross winne rs Tony DiStefano and Bob Harris. Red Wing suspension systems are part icipants in the AMA major co nt ingen cy programs. one night a year, enjoy! My fee lings to it are akin to what I felt the first time I saw an American football game as co mpared to soccer and rugby. My God, cheerleader s, pompo m s, bands and ten elephan ts, co unt 'em te n, all o n the fiel d when a serious game was to be played. On ce in a while it's nice no t to have to suffer th e m iseries of nature and watch in co mple te co mfo r t. My criticism is that so me of those who opdies, becau se they are ar tificial, got a lot of top riders into tro uble. On natural terrain the ro ugher the better, but on a built surface, it co uld have been a bit too rough in a couple of sections, I, and lots of others, flat had heart failure when Marty Smith did his get-off. One of the worst I've ever seen and a prime example of the fact that a bike can get away from the best of them. When Marty Tripes first burst on the scene, I wrote about him and said I though t it was very obvious the youngster took care of himself. His dad came through the office a day or so later, getting a kick out of it because, "Marty just lives on hotdogs." It was pretty obvious that I didn 't know him. By now it's pretty obvious what all ,th ose hotdogs did but for what it's worth Marty, you still have that star q uality that is given to so few. Another publication made it sound as if yo u're about ready to hang it up. Don't. It might be necessary to put in a season now as a support rider, which is tough when all your peers are mo ving up in the hi gh circles, bu t I'm n o t the only one who thin ks yo u have perhaps m ore raw talent than any o the r yo ung ri der we 've seen from this country. A tip of th e helme t to Kasey Roge rs. Desp ite all th e problems wi th Carlsbad an d th e Super bo wl , she h as given wo men racers a cha nce to step fo rward. In one year they went fro m a TT-ro ugh scrambles mo tocross at Indian Dunes, to the International co urse at Carlsbad an d the Superbowl, and that ain 't bad! Whenever you take a stand on something instead of jus t bitchi ng yo u'll get a blast of heat from someone. I think women racers can look ahead co nfidently as long as they act professionally. I can't resist this, but in one of the letters regarding the protest at Carlsbad, one of my edi tors commen ted that he couldn 't see what difference the age of one of the women and the size of bike she rode had to do with it. Well, it's obvious that this dear heart has never herded a 125 and a 250 around a demanding course and compared how he feels after seve ral laps with each. Fair is fai r. There are plenty of men who go back to I25s when they can't keep up with the squids on 250s af ter they get to a certain age, -the lighter bike really gives th em the advantage. As this co mes out in print we11 have had another Distr ic t 37 point ru n and 111 h ave h ad a chance to talk to some more of yo u. Thank yo u guys, wh o have ~~en .or been in ouch. We p lan to get in o n th e ice racing at Long Beach thi s fall. This isn 't a pl ug but h ow neat a p ro mo ter will go all out to do something like th is. Ice racin g is wild ! I wo nder if it 's true that a bunch of m ad Russian s will be o ver fro m Siberia now that detente exists be twe en ou r countries? Is i t true that the flagme n will be penguin s? Harley-Davidson factor y rider Gary Scott's t otal Red Wing suspe nsion endured t he rigors of Ascot's famed ta cky surface , its challenging left a nd ri ght hand t urn s and the jackham mer po und ing of t he jump on th e way t o th e winners circle. Scott's calculated ride and Red Wing total suspe nsion earned Gary h is second Nati onal vic tory thi s se a son . When it c o mes to pe rfo rma nce , you can' t beat t he system.
