Three hundred th irty -seven short
trackers trekked to this valley
arena on a warm Saturday evening
to berse rk for 67 trophies and
payoff spots. Several pro racers stopped
by on their way to the Stockton Mile
and found that the sportsmen boys ar e
pretty to ugh on familiar tracks.
The 360 Expert Main showed why
the Northern California boys go well on
the p ro c irc u it as two Novice s, one
Junior, and one Expert pro cap t ured the
top spots. Mitch Davidson (Kaw)
attempted a re peat of a strong heat race
and jumped to the front from the
start ing line, but older brother Ted
slipped by abo u t lap fou r and m o ved
out. Mit ch held off Ca rl Ye rby and
Allen Ke nyon fo r m o st of the eve nt
only to pull out wit h a bike malfunc tio n
o n t he white n ag la p.

Trophy road race
president Allen Sed d o n . Frankie's first
few races this season wer e po or due to
problems with his new 7 50 water-cooled
Yamaha, but the bu gs are finally o ut
an d the bik e re ally m oves. Alle n p ut up
a good battle and m an age d to take the
lead m ore th an o nce in the two-h ea t
ra ce. I1is 3 5 0 Yam aha couldn 't stand
the pace, however, and h e was forced to
drop back.
Although it was obvio us he was
having some d iffi culty with his m ach ine ,
250 GP was taken by Ken Botham with
a substa ntial le ad . The re al racing in th is
class was fo r sec o nd between Ken 's
te ammate Steve Souter, and Cal ifornia
rider Ken t Ro ckwell . Steve finally
bested Ken t in the final lap .
Cafe class, new to Westwood this
year , was ta ken by John Dixon in hi s
fo u rth straight win. I1is bike has been
described as a "jet" a nd in tru th, it pulls
fast er lap tim es than his 250 ro ad ra cer.
Production cl asses were probably the
mos t exci tin g o f the race da y . With a
field o f alm os t 3 0 well m atch ed bikes,
all t he co m p e ti tio n was in the rid er's
sk ill. Right up to th e last lap it was close
to impossible to predict who was going
to take th e first three place s in the tw o
Production class divisions. Jeff Sm ith of
Superformance Kawasaki picked up the
chec kered n ag in th e Un lim ited an d
selfsponsored Dick Curiston on a
Kawasaki 35 0, won his class, m a kin g
him unbeaten this y e a r.
