Alan Barbic and Robert Buck apparently learned this riders' course pretty well during Saturday's GP races, as they fmished third overall on a 650 Yamaha behind the 900 BMW of Art Pels and Tun McGuire. Finishing fourth overall and first Open Cafe was the 400 Kawasaki of Pete Gilm ar tin and Bob Loose. First in the 400 Production class and sixth overall was an RD 350 ridden by Gary Dade, Bob Foster and Rick Curriston. Some of the Pros who are always asking fo r longer motos were ready to yell "Uncle" by the third 30 minute mota today . Especially Rick Burgett and Barney Newman who rode two classes. Both had their tongues hanging /" out far ,eno ugh to sub for flags. Claude Meyer started off with a win for the Minis. Mike Jones and Billy Parker continued their season's high pain t battle behind him. Mike finished ahead again today but Billy still holds the edge for the season. Karl Usher (Han) led the first 125 Junior mota until the last lap when Bob Cicerchi (Yam) moved by. In the second race Ron Ott (Han) held the lead until Bob got by him with two laps left . Karl led again in the third round bu t once again Cicerchi took over halfway through and Ot t went by two laps later. Tom Granberg (CZ) led the first and second 250 J un ior motos but was reeled in by Buz Grah am in both . By the third race three fourths of the 250 J un ior ri ders ha d dropped out. Resul ts in Res ults Section Salinas Airport Semi-Pro Scrambles By.Joan Worth SALINAS, CAL,JULY 6 The Fourth of July weekend took its toll of riders here, with less than 100 arriving early, after driving through the morning fog that Styl ist 100 Jr. Gregg Leitz in action at Mt. _ View, Oregon. eventually burned off. After the track crew swept, then lightly watered the terrain, the heats got under way. Small classes, outside of the 125 Novices, made fast work out of five laps. So that everyone got a fair shake, the 125 Novice class was bro ken down into two divisions with two trophies at stake in each division. Matt Pemberton (Yam) o f Salinas di d a fan tastic job of hol ding off Paul Gray of Monterey. Lap after lap Pau l tried to get over. under and around Matt. Kenny Digges held off Mike Cahoon in the second division to take home another Airport trophy. In the combined 125 Junior /Expert class, Ken Netto, only a Junior in scrambles, made Expert Fred Bennett feel like the youngsters really do know what they are doing. Ken didn't give an inch so Fred took second pl ace with a smile and a shrug of his shoulders. as he crossed the finish. Fred got back into his own age group in the 250 Expert class but couldn't get by Duane Spence. "How sweet it is" to hear the thunder of the big fo ur stroke engines as they tum it on coming on to the lon g straight. With old timers like Bud Riddle, wo uld you believe, a 14 year member of the AMA and Elmer Gantry co mpeting on their big bore Triumphs, it brings back so me fond memories of years gone by. S.I.R. night MX & Can-Am school By Sue Sykes KENT, WASH.,JULY 9 Fans at S.I.R. had a special treat as they watched two ti mes World Champion J eff Smith mix a little with the local racers in the 250 Pro class. Smith is in the area to conduct a motocross school. 125 Pro rider Bill Joyce won moto one but a fall second time out kept him from the money. On the start of moto two Joyce was run into and then run over. But the fast moving Joyce was working on the guy running second by lap four. Boy, did he fly! The nex t time around he slid out on a sharp left-bander, then pulled out for the evening. Leader Lee Voss made it an easy mota win and claimed the first place purse. Randy Schweizer (C-A) was the boss to night in the 250 Pro class with a fo ur-one record . The outstanding lap of the evening was the fina l ro und of moto one. Spencer FREMONT, CAL.,JULY 2 Steve Eklund put the bad hustle on Al Kenyon on the last lap of the 360 Expert Main when Kenyon got an inch off the pole coming off tum two and Eklund burst ahead to win by a bike length. Keeping it a family affair was Ric k Ekl und winning big in the 36 0 J unior over GB Pizza learn J im Mah on ey and Errol Longboya. Ek lund's Kawasa ki is qu ite a bit faster th an the Hon das , but a bit mo re tempermental. Ran d y Mamola returned to his usual form in the 125 Expert Main, beating out Rod Spencer by a few feet . Brian Tho mpson, the Junior Speedway racer, has turned 14 and with it, Sportsman ridin g age. He proved his minibike training as valuable by dumping all comers in the 125 Novice Main with ease. Tony Adragna beat out John Casey for the next two spots back ab ou t 10 bike lengths. • Results in Results Section. Triple M ShortTrack By Barb Dickerson MARYSVILLE, CAL,JULY II Marysville's quarter mile oval was fast and action was the name of the game . In the 125 Amateur class Ken Gray, Dan Fowler, and . 28 Ric k Schamber put on a show. Riding peg to peg it was anybody's race all the way. The lead changed every lap in the eight-lap Main . Gray too k the chec kered with Fowler an d Scha mbers hot on his heels. Fre mont was well represe nted by Expert Steve Carrillo. Steve came a lo ng way to ride an d that's exactly what he did. First time on the track an d Steve too k home the m on ey in the 360 Expert class. Joey Gar dn er and Larry Barkhouse ba t tle d in the 50/60 Mini class . Joey fin ishe d firs t with Larry a close second.
