Rubly, n o w rid ing o n a Can-Am, tried several ti mes to catch Curt, but Lessel had the co urse wired. . Jeff Vidic did his usual thing and took home the ba co n in the 250 Pro class. Once agai n , Rubly on the Can-Am tr ied to catch Vidic, but his efforts were in vain. One of the bes t races of the nigh t had to be in th e 125 J un io r th ird race . In th e firs t race the lead ch ange d four tim es with Mar k Mon to y a finally co m ing o u t o n top. Doug Lambert made a dash for t he checkere d flag o n his Am- Mex in t he second moto ; but when the flag fell, it was Mon toya getting the re first . The last moto, it was Montoya all the way. Powell SUNNYMEAD, CAL., JULY 13 For mon ths now the ori ginal $800 mon ey hill at De Anza Cycle Park has stood ign ored. With each passing day , the hill got wilder and 22 mea ner. Then, o n July 13, the hillcli m bers came to try their luck. Under clear skies an d a blaz ing sun, bike after bi ke made an attempt at th at 600 feet o f m oun tain . Bike after bike got lost in a cloud of d ust near the top, but none went over. Then came Kerry Peterson. riding his super Maico in th e 400 Stock class. The dust really flew, / and after what seemed hours, it finally cleared away en o ugh to see the hill . The signal was flashed downward to the fans , Pete rson had gone all the way. Once the h ill had been topped, it seeme d lik ely that it woul d fall again , especially sin ce the bikes were getting bigge r with each run. But, th at was not the case. Through the whole first round of co mpe titio n not one bike was able to go over th e top and. mat ch Peterson's record. Durin g th e s econd ro und of competition, what was bad became impossible . Ruts tu rned into can y ons. It was almost an impossible fea t to better th e mar k se t d ur ing the first rou nd of th e race . Riding in the 400 Modified class. Kerry Peterson again topped the 500 foot mark, but even he fell 80 feet short of going over the top. The hill was really in bad sh ape now. It wasn 't until the Open class th at an yone even go t above the 400 foot mark. J ohn Bjorkman, riding a highly m odified 750 Triumph and burning 100% nitro-methane, managed to get up to 450 fee t before the bike flew away from h im. NealMackel, also o n a super Tri u mp h , worked his way up into the thick dust, but as it cleared, he ha d stopped at 5 10 feet. Ro n Thompson, riding a 500cc Yamaha in the Op en class, fina lly set high mark and to ok the class win. But , good as he was , he only made it to 5 15 feet. Kerry Pe terson was the o verall winner for the da y . Peterso n is y o ung, str o ng and sligh t in build. He is a smoo th rider, one who does all of his own maintenance , one who kno ws hi s bike. He also knows ho w to judge a hill. Add all those thi ngs together, throw in a handful o f luck, and you co me up with one of the most co nsisten t winners in hill clim bing. _ Re sults in Results Section CMC MXOCIR By John Bethea EAST IRVINE, CAL.. JULY 18 Th e 250cc Pro sh owdown was a classic as four riders con tested the first ro un d with l\Iark Marinez (l\lai) movin g into the lead on lap three and holding it almost all th e way to th e che c kere d. Alm ost, With less than half a lap to go, he h lew a rod and nearly highsided whil e sliding to a halt. 111at gave Aaron Bassett (J\lai) the opening to take over. Brad Morrison [Mai ] held second at the fin al with Dave Foltz (J\lai ) third. Th e next round was ju st as tight, even though Marin ez had to call it quits as he had no b ackup engine . Th is time Morr ison sn uck out to a slight lead and con tin ued to hold back ch arge after charge from Aaron Bassett. This ti me J e ff Witherell finis he d th ird on his Maico, That set up a tie going in to the final . Off they we nt and agai n Mo rrison snatc hed off th e point posit io n with Bassett huggin g second, Fo r several laps they wen t that way ' un til Aaron's ma chine cam e up with some mech an ical problems and he faded back off the pace. Th at left Morrison all alone in the lea d to ta ke the overall victory. Bassett fin ished as ru nnerup with Foltz third. The 250cc was h o t also in th e J unior clas s with Bru ce Barsumian (Mai ) an d Gary Bead le (Yam) head in g in to the final tie d on poin ts with a firs t and second each. Bead le got a poor start , however, and later had even more problems to co me across the line 13th and wind up fo urth overall. Barsumian, however, held to a second in the last race and won overall with second goi ng to finale winner J im Carlino (Mai) . Th ird was Jo hn Hamamo to (Yam), who to nig h t earned e nough poin ts to m ove into t he Inter mediate ran ks. _ Results in Resu lts Section CMCMX By John Bethea IRWINDALE , CAL.,JULY 18 With one of the bigge st mo tocross races in the coun try, ru n nin g in L.A ., 1,92 7 people still ca me ou t to Irwi ndale to watch the regular Friday ni gh t ru nning of the C~ IC motocross. Chu ck Lunde dominat ed th e 125 cl ass with three wins and still managed to walk off as the King O f The Hill. In the first moto, Lunde go t out off the ga te in fo urth spot, but wo rked into a commanding lead that wo n the first Expert mo to eas ily. The next moto Collins went out for th e day with scooter troubles, this left Jim Privett to take top honors in the class, followed by J ac k Murchal l, The 125 Experts pu t o n a great show today , with Tony Roger s havi ng li t tle tr ouble ta king top h on o rs, bu t beh ind Tony was anothe r sto ry as Steve Po t ts and Bu tch Baker thrilled th e spectators with fa ntastic dispi ays of h andlebar locking, and using each other for traction, but in the end Po tt s cam e out on top, while Baker h ad to settle for thi rd . In the co m bined 250 and Op en Expert class race the first two mo tos were won by 250 m o un ted Keith Patten. In th e last moto Open class ride r, Morga n Malocco got th e hole shot with Patten an d Mich ael Jackson nip ping at h is rear wheel. On the firs t lap Patten le ft the two to do bat tle when he bi t the dirt. In the closing laps Malo cco found some good lines and edged Jackson out fo r the moto win an d top cash in the Open class . Pa tt en remou n ted and still took top money in the 250 class. Pete Peterso n h as finally got his new Maico dialed as he wo n the 250 No vice class, with sligh t threats co ming from Peter Schaffhauser, who took seco nd overall.
