Dan Turner , who h ad run strongly in the IlI'St leg until being blackflagged when his expansion chamber came loose, wedged his Honda into third at the end of the Itrst lap. Mickey Boone had managed a much better starting position in this moto , fourth, and put the pressure on Turner. TIm Hart had again drawn a Itrst lap position of sixth or seventh , but hustled up to follow Boone around Turner in the early laps. Nils Nilsson had started slowly, completing lap one in 23rd place, and was able only to knock off 12 of the 22 riders ahead of him for a 10th moto placing and six th overall. In the laps after halfway, Mickey Boone found a line around a slowing Tommy Croft and slid into second place. Croft seemed to be tiring, and TIm Hart took over third shortly thereafter. Once past Croft, TIm set his . sigh ts on Boone. As Smi th went on to his second moto win, Hart caught and passed Bo one, making .... a pair of seconds for Team Yamaha. Boone maintained third, good enough for fourth overall, as Croft finished fourth in the moto and third for the day.
