While the leaders were battling it out for the over all win , Ron Wright slid into th e tbird pla ce finish . Rick J on es after going berserk on the first lap , still m an aged to pi ck up the first Junior spot. Larry Roeseler won three races this weekend, one of them included the 250 Expert/J unior ra ce on th e Viper side. Andy Kirker and Roeseler's Harley teammate Bruce Ogilvie, kept Larry honest by pushing him arou nd all three laps . Kirker ended up bein g sandwiche d between the two Ha rleys for second. Mike Eckardt did a repeat of last weekend, blowing off the other 250 Juniors with another win. With Eckardt racin g, Mark Zoller and Roger Dubaich had to settle for an impressive second and third each. Dean Modesett has been picking up a few wins again in the 175 Expert clas s, and this weekend was no ex ception. Max Eddy , also on a KTM, got the second sp o t while newly-turned Yamaha Danny Williams, riding for ri d e r Sunshine Yamaha, was third. In the 100 Expert /Junior class, it was Marc Cartwright leading them around the first lap with Bob Myers and Chris Weber in hot pursuit. Car twrigh t did not rea ch the finish, so Bob Myers moved into the winning position with Chris staying in second. Doug Martin and his trick Hodaka finally picked up a finish at third. Tom Rutten kept his little Hodaka pegged the whole three lap s for first Trail J unio r ahead of Gary Willens and Mark Gutebier. If Myers, Weber, and Mar tin thought their battle for first was something, they should have been in with these guys . All three Juniors were so close that they could have shifted and braked for each other. Mark Gran ger and his vintage CZ waited for the first two 400 Novice riders to do themselves in , then just rode in for the win. Ken Miller and Larry Lu ce were the first and second fastest 250 Novices of the weekend. W. H. Keehan won the 17 5 Nov ice class, whil e Chuck Cartledge only left his dust for the other Trail Novices to follow. The Desert Vipers put on a good race , with all of the races goi ng off on time . The co u rse was fast. but the blinding dust slowed down some of the rid er s. Th e p it road go ing in was so long, you should have go tten a finisher pin jus t for ge tt ing to th e race. Bu t o nce you go t th ere , th e lon g ride was well worth it , for th e day of Superbowl ac tio n, District 3 7 desert style. Results in Results Section . Larry was standing around by the banner truck, when the banner wen t up for the 100 Expert/Junior race, with his helmet off. By the t ime he p ut his race face on, and got to the bomb, h e was th ird from last. By the end of the first lap he was second and pushing Chris Weber very hard. When Roeseler came around the second time he was about two miles ahead of Weber, who ended up second. Not only was Larry la te to start, but he was riding a borrowed bike. Bob Myers. who won the Vipe r side, was third. Robbie Panna is a 175 Junior berserkowho picked the 100's race to try out his newly acquired 400 monosh ock. Parma led all of th e 400 Expert /Juniors around the course for the first two laps, with Mitch Mayes in hot pursuit. On his last lap Parma crashed, giving the lead to Mayes, who then proceeded to do the same thing crash . This was the wrong thing to do, especially with Doug Winchell running third. Winchell kept his 400 Mono upright and pegged to take the overall win. Jeff Kapland his 175 Husky took the ch eckered flag firs t in the very co mpetitive 175 Expert/Junior race. Dean Modesett and Frankie Keepers, Jr. tried every trick they knew to get by Kaplan, but it was useless. • Results Pending.
