Wes Cooley jr. had co llided with Peter Tsumura and crashed while leading th e 350 Production race run just before the 250 GP. As a resu lt, he was late to the 25 0 GP grid, an d started in the second wave. Yet Coole y was in sixth place by the seventh lap , right beh ind Galin do, who was dicing with Dic k Fuller. The Yam ah a o f Full er had little steam o n Galindo's bike , whi ch had gone from a stone to a se mi-rocket with the first stages o f he lp from Mac k Kambayash i. Th e t rac k seem ed faste r, the riders flew higher an d' far t her and co ndit ions were excellent all day lon g. Th e first class on the circui t , the 125 Pros, h ad th e cro wd in awe ! The bikes, co m ing off the ne w double jumps o n the back straight, literally shook the Mota o ne saw Marty Moates (Han) as the leader of the pack with Dan LaPorte (FRA), riding for Fran ks Racing Prod ucts, holding a solid second on Moates. In the p its, LaPorte com men te d that he needed only one more lap to take Moates. Te am Yamah a rid er, Bruce McDougal (Yam) placed thi rd and the Lun de brothers, TIm and Chu ck, pl a ced fourth an d fifth respectively . An identical battle in mota two sh ap ed up qu ickly with LaPone as the King of the Hill . Moates was running seco n d but pulled off with p ipe problems. Bob Stem (Yam ) was third and m o ved into second when Moates DNFed. La Porte pulled away fro m the field and took the overall victory. After finis hing third in m o ta o ne, McDougal collected another third in mota t wo which gave h im the seco nd spot at the end of the day . A very sty lish rid er, Bob Ste m , finishe d third o n the day wit h a six-two combinat io n . The ga te dropped an d the 25 0 Pros were o n the gas wi th Bill Rubly (C. A) gett ing th e hole shot. Th e en tire race was a h ole shot, as Ru bly ran away with the m ota. Val Tam ietti (Mai) was th e second runner wi th th e Husky mounte d Bob Elliott brin gin g up the top th ree. " No r-Cal " rider , Neil MacDannald (Yam ) led m ost of mota two with Elliott in pursuit. Rub ly went by Elliott o n the first lap and ey e d MacDannald.
