were wor kin g hard at Straddle Line, others were getting it on at Elk Heights and Green Acres Raceway. Doug Raines (Kaw) had his happy day as he was first past the ch eckers on three out o f four motos - doing it in two Pro cla sses - 20 minutes each. Raines worked his way from fourth on the start of the 125 class to get past the fron t runners by the end of lap three. Halfway in this moto, Raines pulled away fro m the pack and left the dicing to Rocky Perrott, curren t No . Two NMA from Olympia (Hon), Mickey Lumsden, Kim Griggs, and this week's winner at S.l. R. and Puyallup, Ed Davis . In moto two, 125 Pro Doug Raines was back in seventh aft e r lap one. He pi cked them off till he was behind Rocky Perrott for nine laps and that's the way it ended. Perrott claimed a well -earned first overall. Ra ines claimed a second in the 125 class and rust overall in the 250 Pro class. During moto one of 12 5 Pro action Ed Davis (Hon) took the tower downhill with a little more than his hu b co uld take. Ed dragged the bike out of the way and shook his head. Every spoke hole on both sides of the hub broke off. Davis put the spare o n for the next moto, but a crash in the Open class ended his racing for the day . But the spare wheel traveled on fro m Davis to Gary Sn yder (Hon). Snyder took a first in moto one and with a wheel change between motos was able to claim first overall in the 125 C class. The wheel stories are no t over ye t . In the first moto of the 125 C class a rider got a foot under Kelly Dolphin's rear wheel and neither got any racing in until the mechanic wrenched them apar t. Dolphin finished m o t o two in good standing, then pulled off his front wheel to throw on Todd Stewart's bike in the 125 B class. Stewart was able to put a three-four together for third overall. Results in Results Section. • S.I.R. night MX By Sue Sykes KENT, WASH. ,jULY 2 The 250 Pros put on the show at S.I.R. as the fans cheered th e racers past the ch eckers. Blaine Elledge (C·A) , Wash in gton Nl\IA No. One, put two in a row for fir st overall. Second in line on both motos was Randy Schweizer (C· A), out for the first time in three wee ks. The 100 A class saw newly-advanced Brad Hoyt (Su z) out in front in moto one and claimin g a third in moto two for a well-earned second overall. l\Iark Luchini (Suz) zipped by everyone in mo to two and cinched fir st overall. Bill Jo yce (Ho n ) took home the top bucks fo r his fine ride in the 125 Pro divisio n. j o yce ra n a way with the first moto after leader Gary Potts missed a shift on the bac k jump. joyce took the lead on moto two, but forfeited the lead to Lee Voss (Suz) due to b ike troubles. Potts (Suz) got in the moto two start pile-u p and pulled out for the night. Voss took second overall wi th a fo urth . and rust score. • Results in Results Section. But Geffe rt was ho t in the second mot o and passed Mike early in th e rac e. After a few clos e lap s Am aral swoop ed by Ge ff ert o n the long straight. Geffert later dropped out a nd Amar al was st anding first in line a t the p ay window. CMC MX Sunnyvale By Steve Castillo SUNNYV AL E, CAL. , J UNE 29 Neil Macffannald, th e hard charging Noguchi pil ot, co n t inued his dominat ion of North ern California motocross by winning both 250 and 500 Pro classes today at Sunnyvale. MacD annald didn 't sh ow h is st u ff in either class till th e sec on d moto. 1\I0to one of th e 25 0 Pro s belonged to Ron Hu ffman (C·A), wh o darted off the line first and pulled out a go o d deal. A large and well filled mudhole was the problem fo r Ma cD annald. He had to take his go ggles off early in the m oto and then had to figh] d ust and sm all ro cks with no p rotection. Ron Self (Mon) came up to battle Huffman. Self pushed Huffman for several laps a nd then he made his m ove. Just as soon as Self had p assed Huffman he crashed in a dusty tum. Neil MacDannaid was coming on strong with just a few laps to go but Huffman was at . the flag first with l\IacDannald taking second and Rocky Po cock (Oss) also do ing so me serious riding, t aking third. Moto two again found Huffman with . the hole sho t and the lead. This time MacDannald kept hi s goggles on and lo o ked intent on a win . It didn 't take lo n g, in fact on the se cond lap Monterey Fairgrounds short track By Joan Worth MONTEREY, CA L., jUNE 28 The last race of the five week series of semi-pro short track brought .so rne strong competition to the l\Ionterey Fai rgrounds 'with I three " Hi-Po in t " trophies at stake. As the evening progressed, n o on e stayed cool! john Mason took a bad spill in the 100 Novice heat, but ca m e back to win that eve nt by a wide margin. The . soreness must have set in between races as he co uld 0I1ly m an age. a third place in the Main behind J ohn Land and Kevin HigilJ, all three riders on Ya mahas. Bill Curtis was way out in front in po ints in the junior class and didn't want to settle for a back row start in the Main. He crashed hard in his heat. injured his hand. had the amb ulance attendan ts bandage it, and even tho ugh he was hurting, rode to vic tory in th e 25 0 Junior race ass uring him the Hi-Point trophy th at he had worked so hard to win . Steve Long of Sal inas doesn 't believe in being second. Altho ugh he only had to place third in the 360 Expert cla ss, winning is his bag. Steve led t he race for six laps with Ron Alsop right on h im , but " one slip is all it t akes." Steve found him self on the ground losing not o n ly the race but the trophy as well. Fred Bennett was only one point behind Steve at the beginning of the evening so ended up on top. Fred's Hi-Point trophy came after a five year effort. Sixteen-ye ar -old David Gortz is another rider th at lost out last year, lead ing in points with one race to go he broke his ankle in a crash. Dave's sm o o th and consistent riding th is season paid off, as he wa s declared Hi-Point Novice. • Reno mini hotshoes ride again By Lee Darby RENO, NEV.• jULY 2 TIle local area mini program is back in full swing again after a three week layoff due to prior commitments of the fai r grounds, In t he 60cc class there were nine rid ers for the Main, with seve n Novices o n the scratch line and two j u n io rs handicapped on the 10 yard line. It was close action going in to the first tu m with Steve Zubietta emerging o ut of t he pack in fr ont , with Randy Hipdon charging righ t behind hi m . Randy ch arged a bit too hard an d went down co ming out of a corner. The Junior ride rs were making their way through the pack. Mike Da rby was trying to take ove r the number two sp o t from Ronnie Troye by riding the outside of the corners, but Ronnie wasn 't ab o u t to let himself be passed
