Part II By Patric ia Gaunt KEEPS YO U GOING bhl.nd· Americans on the Sidecar-cross Circuit o This report covers two intern a ti o n al ' races, J un e 15 at Hirsinque , France and J une 22 at Mossiac, France. The race at Hirsi nque was a three heat affair: the first two for 20 minutes plus two laps, and the last for 25 min utes plus two laps . The course was typically Fren ch , which is wide, rou gh. extreme changes in elevation and difficult. Our friends the Russ ians were also there, only this time more friendly relations prevailed. The Russ ian team is comp rised of th ree sidecars. Their construction is similar to that o f the English Wasp but heavier . They use the Ural engine and drive train. Their racing antics are the talk of the circuit. Th ey use lots of throttle and little finesse. They use slam-bang tactics, crash a lo t, and are quite spectacular. The race was won by Englishmen Terry Go od and J ess Rixo n, rid ing a No rton /Wasp . Th e Russians man aged a third and we were l Oth , The race at Mossiac was a ne w experie nce for us - the lo ng downhills would provide speeds in th e 75 mph bracket. Th is race was our best effor t to da te. We managed an eighth fo r the d ay , but mech anical pr o blems kept us from a wi n o r a se cond. We have learn ed a lot about going up and down hills in the past few weeks. The race was won by former Holland champ ion J an Ten Thise and J an Jassen. aboard a 750 E1\1L/Y arnaha. Attendance at both races was approximately 12,000. Their racing program is very different from ours. It is scheduled to be a day-long affair, with a massive lunch br eak from 12 Noon until three p .m. Practi ce in the morning and first race a fte r lunch . The sidecars are featured, but are usu ally acc o mpa n ied by a solo class . People come early and bring their picnics for a day of racing. Admission co sts ran ge from $2 to $5 depending on occasion. • The Harry Gaunt/Rolla Adams crew doping things out in the paddock.
