New time at OCIRAMC By Hidden Images EAST IRVINE, CAL.,JULY 2 The American l\lotocross Club returns to OCIR after taking a month off, but they now hold Weqnesday nights, instead of the 01' Friday nights. The AMC gang kept th ings organized, as usual , with the urn's" takin g th e Pro classes tonight Marty Miller and Morris Malone. Scott Cavness (Bu l) led t he start 0 f the first moto, and proceeded to parade around in first, making it look all too easy. Mark Marinez (Mai) slipped by Morris Malone (Mai) on the fourth lap and went after Cavness. But on the final lap , Cavness somehow wen t off the track, allowing Marinez into the lead. Funny thing though, Marinez also missed a co m er and went off the tra ck, allowing Malone to cruise the rest of the lap for the win. Malone too k the start of the second moto, with Marinez hot on his tail. A lapped rider slowed Marinez down , and that was all that Malone needed to gain space. Malone once again took the lead in the third moto, and held it to the fin ish, taking the top cas h for the day. Mar inez passed Cavness over the grandstand jump early in the moto to take a clean sweep for second. Scott Cavness took third. Marty Miller (Hon) led the small group of 125 Pros around the track for the first few laps in the first moto, with Marty Moates (Hon) and Scott Clifton right behind, pressuring. Clifton slipped by Moates on the third lap, but Marty and his Cross-up Honda promptly repassed the D&G rider. Moates swept around the outside on the front sweeper and scooted p ast Miller fo r the lead and ) im media tely stretched out his lead. But c bad luck hit Mo ates once again, this time his rod and h is piston blew up, leaving Miller the win, after getting away from Clifton. Miller got o ff into the lead in the second moto, with Clifton and Birb Greenburg (Yam) not far behind. ( Clifton fell on the second lap, but n repassed Greenburg. Miller was too far in front to catch, and the pack stayed as is. Clifton ran aw ay with the third moto win, Miller grabbed second, but that was en ou gh to give him the win. Greenburg finished third overall . Results in Results Sec t io n . Birb • Chris Cannon upsets mini class By And i Gangewer ELSINORE, CAL.,JUN E 28 Kelly Templeton, a fast gro wing " Hot Shoe" in th e 250 Novice class, started out on th e righ t foot , but ende d up riding in the ambulance instead of on his CZ . Templeton to ok th e chec ke red in the first moto with Glen Rees closin g fast but se tt ling fo r sec o nd and Larry Hayes tak in g third. The Beginners ran with the Nov ices bu t had t he adv antage of st arting out in front. Hayes had a good strong lead for the first few lap s bu tRee s, abo ard a Yam ah a was ca tc hing up each lap . Kelly fell hard on th e third lap and was taken to th e hosp ital for observ ation. The last moto , Hayes was wa y out front again leavin g Mit ch Zehner to a second pl ace all by himself. The number three posi t ion was really a battle between three riders , Ro bert Davis , Mike Wheeler and Glen Ree s all ridi ng Yamahas. Mike Wheeler pi cked up the Beginner trophy and Larry Hayes the Novic e. After weeks of Pat Richmond being undefeated in th e Min i class, Chris Cannon an l l-year-o ld fro m Norco, took the win in the sec o nd an d third motos to take the over all from Pat . Richmond, is truly King of the Mini class. but Cannon, an Am ateur, really rode hard fo r two be au tiful win s to tak e th e trophy. Pat won the first m oto with his usu al e xpe r t riding ability but had to se tt le for second overall . All the " Elsin o re Boys" were back to try their luck again in the 500 Open Exper t class. "T-Bone" Don Grigsb y had a good start but David Reinhardt quickly stole this front position out from under him . Ed Steffe n and Keith Moss were reall y giving each o th er fit s over th e th ird pl ace spo t. T·Bone 's 400 Yamaha de cided it didn 't like to be second to an yone and j ust up and quit. It showed its protest by spitting out one puff of sm o ke before it stopped altogether. Dave to ok the first place honors th is time. Re inh ardt liked the front position so well that he headed for the front o f the pack again in moto t wo . This was to no avail, as hi s bike didn't like being worked that hard and it tried the same thing as Grigsby's. With the two front runners o u t with bike tro uble , Ed Steffen hung in there for the overall win • with Jim Throne taking the second.
