Food for thought, out of all the injuries for the week there we re more people h urt pit racing than out on the co u rse. Results Pending. • Last Chance Qualifier By Chris Andrews ORANGE, CAL.• JULY 13 Of the high school motocross riders that will ride at the Superbowl of Motocross, 40 of them qualified to day. A mix-up occurred in Dean Modesett on his way to a Div. Two Expert win on his t rusty Penton. Stand out in the desert with a camera and someone will show off for you. Bruce Ogilvie to pped all th e Trail Expe rts to bring home the gold . 20, spot to third place on a bike he had bought one day before the race. The next group of riders to sweat it out were the Divis ion One Amateur/Experts. Andy Kirker, with almost a dozen class wins under his belt, was first to the bomb followed by team Harley rider Larry Roseler. Pulling hard in third and first Amateur was Mike Eckardt (1\lono). By the third loop it looked like Andy had it all sewn up, Larry cou ld catc h him but just co uld n ' t quite get around him. So the two were going to it u p a sand wash and wo uld n't you know it, Andy found the only ro ck on the co urse. The resulting crash cost h im the overall. Meanwhile, Bob Balentine (Hus ) had come up from a not so hot start and started to badger Eckhart, passing him on one of the tri cky downhills, that's the way they stayed to the chec kered ! Open class action saw Larry Roesler, mounted on a borrowed m onoshock er , en tering the race at the last minute. When the banner came down the first one to the trail was Mitch Mayes (Hus) fo llowed by, if yo u haven ' t already guessed it, Larry Roseler. Coming in dead even for third, a couple of Checkers, Jim Sumners and " Sm o ke Bomb" Gaetz. But just past the bomb things were to change because there was an uphill and some ridge backs that really overheated some bikes. One bike that seized from the pressure was "Smoke Bomb's" sending him off the course and almost over a drop off! With Mitch still leading there was a battle go ing on for third between so meo ne who wasn 't looking so go o d at the born b, bu t was doing just fine after two loops, Tim Boman. Tim had co me up beh ind Sumners and Jim didn 't like that so he put up about a five mile protest with the decision goi ng to Tim. <, Up front Larry Roseler, with virtually no rest between races, had passed Mi tch for the lead and held it to the finish . Coming in for fourth overall, after a super rid e. Amateur J oe Miller! For the never to be forgotten Novices it went something like this, for the Open class from bomb to finish it was Jack Trotter (Hus ) with Craig Kinroerman (Suz) in second and the first Yamaha rider to finish, number four sixty nine Dennis Wells. For Division One the first two riders who were to co me in really smo king the rest of their class, Van ce Schmid (1\lono) ' and Rick Murphy (Mono) and rounding out their class for third overall, Ken Miller (Mo no ). For the Division Two race , Dale Brown (Yam) too k them by surprise leading wire to wire, fo llowed by the next hig h fin isher John Tobin. Bac k to the available positions for the 125 J unio r class. In the beginning MIC was told that they would be able to qualify 20 high school motocrossers only to find that six positions would be ava ilab le. There were so many riders in the 125 J un ior class that two divi sions were created. Only th e top three in each divis ion could qualify. No explanation of the cut was given to AI,IC. MIC's regular races were run along with the qualifying races. Pro rider Bruce Baron (Yam ) ran away with the 250 and Open classes. He had taken the lead early in each race and held it until the finish. Powder Puffers Jo Ann Miley and Lisa Howard rode along with the 100 class. Jo Ann beat Lisa in both t he first and second rnoto, Lisa lost her chain in the second rnoto, forcing her to drop out.
