The 500 Pro's started out wi th Bill Clemen ts getting the hole shot while John DerHammer (Mai) a nd Rex Staten m ade tracks not too far behind. Rex soon passed Clements and took the lead. Wayne Boy er (CZ) se t everyon e back by getting a poor start and then working his way from th e ' m iddl e of t he pa ck to second place. TI,e second 50 0 Pro moto saw Rex ge t the hole sh o t and a goo d he althy lead. Th e batt le was on for second p lace and Jim West (Mai) decided he wanted it and passed Gaylon Mos ier (Mai), only to drop out on th e second to the last lap . Boyer moved into third. but retired after his han dle bars loo se ned on the d ownh ill. St at en took t he overall with two firsts an d a lo t of cro ss-up s. Gaylon Mosier and Rex had a slight m eeting as the two diced it out and then crashed into each o t her. Staten re covered from the crash and went on to win the fir st moto . The second round saw West hlast aut of the start an d take a lead th at he never lost. lI is smooth sty le in the second race didn't do him m uch go od in the stand ings, d ue to his bad luc k in the first.
