For ma n, a se c o nd -y ear rid er curren tl y ho lding a dual license ( First and Se co nd Division) • . shot fro m h is po le slot in the fo ur-lap finale and held off Fo ntana 's Jim Fishback fo r the Scr at ch victory. After a three -rider jam into the first turn, Forman and Fishback drew away and battled it out fo r the du ration. Santa An a's Clint Palmer, who at 27 years old is riding his first year of speedway , made a complete turnabout fro m last week 's sixth-place finish in the Handicap Consolat io n with an impressively easy win in the Handicap Main. Another first-year professional , Shawn McCo nnell, a graduate of the Ju n i o r S peedway p r o gram , was runner-up in fro nt of local newco mer Wayne Lewis. Lo cal "hot" Rod Sexton, yo unger brother of nat io na l ru nner-up Jeff Sexton, found the groove in h is second week o n the San Bernardino ova l with a f aci le s core in the Handi cap Co nsolation, wh ile co nsistent Dave Galvin dupli cat ed his tri ump h o f last w e e k by c a p t u rin g th e Scratch Co nsolation. The victory provided the T usti n fire man with a double, as he wo n the best-of-three race match fro m Bobby Ross, taking the first and last heats. Irwindale, California July 10. 1975 The yar dage markers were re-adjusted th is week, measured on the crash wall instead of the pole, and it turned int o the bes t night of Handicap racing o f the year. It was a back yardage marker night as all but only a co up le of experienced veter ans were unable to make it from be hind to tr ansfer. The first semi faced off wi th Mark Cherry o n the 10 , Mike Konle and Bruce Penhall o n the 30 and Mik e Curoso, J e ff Sexton and Dubh Ferrell all co m ing from the 40. For five lap s it w as a six-m an race with the fin al lap being decided by only a few feet be t ween the first four. Curoso won that o ne with Sexton second and Penhall third, all makin g the Main . 11,e other th ree slots were filled in the seco nd Semi when Randy Marsh held back a tenacious charge from Larry Shaw and Jim Fishback. 11,e first heat we nt to Ric k Woods over what appeared to be a dead heat for second between Mik e Konle and Jerf Sexton. Onl y one co uld t ransfer and after a brief co n fere nce at the scoring tower, the runnerup spot went to Sexton. TIle riders themselves weren't sure who took second. it was that dose. The old favorite, Rick Woods, won the Scratch ~I ain over Larry Shaw. These two have had a battle all week. Neither Woods nor Shaw made it to the Handicap Main, but first yea r rider Dean Forman did, not o nly is this his first year in Speedway. but he has ea rned a Division One license and he put it to good usc Friday night when he earned his way to the Ma in and went all the wa y for the go ld. The Fair will run one more week so if yo u arc planning to go to Speedway plan on getting there one hour early. Bakersfield. California July 12, 1975 Bakersfield fans get more o ut of their racing and put more into it than anywhere in the speedway ci rcuit. These su per people keep asking for sp ecial Ma tch Races and t hey arc mo re th an read y to pay fo r it . This past Satu rday night, over $575.00 was put up for j ust one race; five laps be tween th ree riders from Taft Wrecking Crew and the Bomb Sq uad. T h e Ba k e r s f ie l d Bakersfiel d Bo m b Squad did j ust th at, t hey bombed o ut. Russ Smith won, with Gr an t Sayle rs second and Russ' brot her Mark for th ird , all three o f Taf t. Dave Sims had to be t he happiest guy in Bakersfield when he won the Han dicap Main, his first victory of the 1975 season. Dave rides fo r Lebard and Underwood. Cotton Goff V.W. and Mo lnar's Che vron and if he was a litt le bigger he probably would have so me m o re advertisers on his lea t h ers. Mike Curoso is another rider that has three sponsors.
