Close to 90,000 spectators crammed London's Wembley Stadium recently to watch Evel Knievel attempt a leap across 13 London buses. The number proved to be unlucky for the King of the Daredevils as his near perfect flight ended in disaster upon landing. What caused the Last of the Gladiators to crash? London buses are six feet, seven inches wide while Mack trucks, Knievel's usual obstacle, are six feet across, which means that Evel missed his mark by seven feet. Knievel sustained a broken back bone, pelvis, hand and finger in the accident and brought his career broken bone total to 54. Despite his statement to the crowd that "The people of London have witnessed my last jump," late word is that Knievel and mechanic Roger Reiman will return to England in September or October to complete their British tour. . . \ • J
