Greg Hiestand, a 19·year·old Downey resi dent, really showed the 500 Open Novices around the track. Hies tand t ook number one position and the other "Big Bores" never saw his face throughout t he eve ning. Bultaco mounted Robert Riffle was the number two man by taking the second in motos one and two and slipping down to a fourth in the last go round. Dennis Helfrick was third overall with a th ird , fourth and a "no show" in that order. All the Elsinore riders and spectators had a special treat after all the regular races were finished, Anaheim 's . Gen e Crownover put on a show to stun everyone. The race for these trophies j ust started June 14th, so it's not too late to get in the competition. Any father willing to admit to being 35 or over was invited to compete on bikes of 80cc or less. The . results set few records, but the fathers and the crowd lo ved the show. Winner in the "Super Dad" contest was Tom La Rue on a modified bike about two feet high. The bike, built and also ridden by Ken Miller, would have been disqualified in the regular mini class. It boasted a Chrysler o utboard engine and burned so mething that never came o ut of a regular gas pump . Th ere was . more than eno ugh po wer , but when you p ut a f ull grown man o n a pair of wheels tha t 'are only abou t 10 inches in diame ter, m uch of th at p ower was lost. The twin carbs, aided by a pair of ra th er big feet, man aged to work the bike up to a high mark that beat o ut second place fath er, J im Mock Jr., mounted on a little Yamaha. The Father's class was run fo r fun, but the rest of the day was devoted to more serious efforts. The large mini class showed the dads that weight does make a difference, and m ost of the riders t opped the high marks set by th e fathers on similar bikes. Going almost to the t op of the hill was winner Steve Stith on his Honda. Steve also captured a first in the 1OOcc class o n this same bike. For awhile it looked like there would be no surprises for the da y. Class winners were names that have almost become standard in the 360, 400 and 450 races. Then Jim Collier, on a bike he just bought, beat out the competition to take firs t in the 500cc stock class and Ken Miller grabbed off the 500 modified. The Open class, normally.dominated by the big , highly modified Triumphs, saw a Honda and a Kawasaki take over. Ron Standeven, on an 836cc Honda was pitted against the 800cc Kawasaki ridden by Jerry Bamford. TI,e deep throated so und of the Ho nda was quite a co n trast to the bumble bee buzz of the Kawasaki. But it was the super power of t hat Honda th at took the race. Win ners from each class were paired for the run off for overall win of the day: It wasn't too surprising to find that Standeven 's big Honda took the day. The fin al run pitted the big Honda against the much smaller Yamaha ridden by Craig Mock, a bike that normally would be eliminated early in the co mpe t it io n in a drag clirnbv-But yo ung It takes concentration , experience and a well tuned mount to make a ru n look so easy. Triumph takes Sidehack'battle at Valley Cyc.le Park By Barbra Brown MOORPARK, CAL.,JUNE 15 Racing on a newly resurfaced track, the hacks were going even faster than they 'have been in this 10 race series . With a turnout of 12 sidehacks the spectators were assured of a fine show. A t the drop of the gate the Stevens /Chamberl ain 750 Honda grabbed the lead followed by the 750 Kawasaki of Ridyard/Vermursch. These two fast hac ks battled it out for three laps for the to p position: then on lap three Vermusch, on the big Kaw, got his foot caught under the hack's wheel and tw isted h is ankle. This injury forced th em to drop back to fourth place and let th e big Triumph of Pal fry man/Gardener . take over the battle for the top position. Meanwhile, out in front of the lightweights was the 500 Yamaha of Lucchese/Morgan. They were followed by the 360 Bultaco of Brown/Barada, whi~h dropped ~3f~ ~'! last place on the uphill. When the Bul dropped back Im mken /Nelson picked up second place. Bu t they could n o t ho ld onto second as Huntley/Ritchie and their 450 Honda .Wasp t ook up t he battle with the lead in g Ya maha. That's the way the first moto finished; Yamaha, Honda, Yamaha. Stevens/Chamberlain were dominating the big bores with their Honda, followed by Palfryman/ Gardener. At the finish the results were Honda, Triumph, Triumph. At the start of the second m oto Palfryman/Gardener grabbed the lead in the first comer, but were passed on the uphill by Ridyard Willi his wife, riding as passenger. This lead was not to last as his wife fell off on the uphill lettin g Palfryman/Gardener take over once agai n. Back in the p a c k Stevens/Chamberlain were working their way up and finally took over the top posi tion. Everything was going fine for them until they stalled it going thro ugh the esses, they got going fast enough and did not lose any ground. A short time later the oil cap flew off and Stevens was being showered by oil, this cost them first place and the overall vi ctory to Pal fry man /Gardener. Bell/O'Conno r took s econ d, Stevens/Chamberlain third ; and Haller /Swenson in for fourth on a Husky. In s mall bo r e actio n Lucc hese/Morgan were once again out in front fo llowed by Immken/Nelson. The Ho nda Wasp took over second place and things looked like they we re going to stay that way. But then the le aders, Lucchese/Morgan, threw a chain and handed the win to the Honda team of Huntley /Ritchie. • Results in Results Section.
