Rid ing a Triumph, Brown o pe ne d up an early lead in the race wh ich he would not give up though he was given a stro ng chal len ge by Seattle's Pat Marinacci at the seven-lap m ar k. Ch arlie wound up setting a track re cord of 5: 0 0. 3 7 on the half-mile co urse. In t he Ex pe rt Trophy Dash held ear lie r, Brown built up a similar lead, bu t sudden ly quit the ra ce after a lap on t he s-shaped hack stretch . Charlie sa id he dropped out because o f a faulty kill button. "'We took precautions to m ake sure it d idn 't ha p pe n during the m ain event," co m me n t ed the . Castle Ro ck 19-y car-old, who has been ra cing competitively for six yea rs. "We 've really had trouble all year - a lot of carburetor problems: ' Nonetheless, his rec ord-breaking sho win g at Castle Ro ck was the se cond time in as many nights he had written new marks. The night before at Portland's Sidewinders' cou rse he had set new track records in every event he entered. Marinacci, who won the Trophy Dash , fini shed second behind Brown in the Main . lie start ed well ba ck in the pa ck, hut pulled up and dueled with Portland's Sonny Burres for seve ra l turns before takin g second place for go od on the fifth lap .
