In third place was He in z Luthringshauser, wi th Dick Greasley fourth, Gu st ave Pape , m aking h is "IT debu t , on the Konig in fif th position an d Helmut Schilling six th. Steinhausen held h is lead at the end of the second lap, but "Mac Hobson had broken the re cord with a lap 20.2 seconds better than Steinhausen 's short lived record. The ga p between the pair was now 3.4 seconds ! At Ramsey, more than halfway rou nd o n the last lap, it was reported that Hobson had taken the lead, and was two seconds clear of Steinhausen , But in the Mountain section the Konig outfit regained the lead to win, by ju st four seconds. Greasley was third, well over a minute behind this battling duo, with Helmut Schillin g grabbin g fourth position, Derek Plummer fifth, and Gustave Pap e sixth position and with it the Overseas Ne wcomer Trophy fo r the best visi tin g n ewcomer. Retirements were heavy with 37 in all, including Egan Sc ho ns, wh o threw a con-rod on h is BMW, and unlu ckies t o f all Richard Wegener who sto pp ed on t he Moun tain Climb wh en he had run ou t of petrol. He pulled o ff th e battery termin al, and the ti ny sp ark was e no ug h to ign it e the pe trol wh ich had be en pumped over the out fit through a sp lit in the fuel p ip e. The out fi t , which was powered by o ne of Schauz u's sp ar e engines was to ta lly destro yed in th e fire . Conditions wer e still perfect fo r th e postponed 350cc Junior "IT. Ch as Mortimer a nd T o m He rr o n , tw o o f the handful of regular grand prix competitors in this world cha mp io nshi p round, were first to push their m achines awa y. But at the end of that first lap Ch arlie Williams was leading the fie ld, five seconds ahead of Alex George, who in turn was eight seconds up on Tom Herron. Mortimer wa s fourth less than fou r sec o nd s beh ind Herron . What a race! After tw o lap s there was still m ore proof, if proof were needed, th at this was go ing to be a close fought bat ti e.
