Gold Bar National Trial By Bud Mylerberg GOLD BAR, WASH ., MAY 3 1 Clear skies and 85 degree weather on trials day were a welcome variation from Gold Bar's usual steady drizzle, but at the National they threatened to scuttle the whole event, as run-off from the melting snow in the surrounding m ountains swelled creeks to the bursting point an d caused many a National co mpe t it o r to fill his Dunlop boots without the sat isfaction of a steadying dab. A hastily constructed log bridge over May Creek's fast-flowing three-foot-deep water saved the loop, and last-minute replacements for the wettest sec ti o ns saved riders from the worry o f d ro wned igni ti o ns and bent connecting rods..' Lane Leavitt, 1974 U.S. National Champion, won the event in a strong co mebac k after his d isappointing finish in the first round of th e series in Southern California, but he almost gave it awa y with a p air of careless rides. In his first lap , he hung on too long in the rocky , up-hill entry of section 20 and th en couldn 't accelerate quickly enough to ge t over the three-foot rock step in the middle, and traded in an easy one for a five. But it was wide-open section I 7 th at almost un-did him. On his first lap he ignored the easy line everyone else wa s using in favor of a spectacular drop-off-the-ro ck, ride -the-Iog route . And he cle aned it, to the delight of the spe ctators, but on the second try it pitched him o ver the handlebars and gave him th e on ly five of th e day in that section. The sections included about every type o f ro ck imagi nable, from dry arid moss-covered to wet and slimy, and from horizon tal to near vertical.
